The lyrics come to me, faint but clear as my chest tightens. Has the moment really come? And is it here to stay? Or will she just leave again like she die before?

I force myself to get out of bed before more questions come. I don’t want to know the answers, not when a possible reunion with Harrison is hours away.

“Morning,” I say, my voice breaking the stillness of the room as I step out of the bedroom.

Devyn opens her eyes and looks up at me with a smile. “You looked so peaceful as you slept I didn’t have the heart to wake you.”

I nuzzle her neck and kiss her cheek, inhaling her sweet scent. “After last night’s activities, you left me so tired out I needed my beauty sleep.”

She giggles, her fingers still strumming her guitar. “We had a lot to catch up on, that’s why.”

For the next five minutes, I listen to her play, watching her fingers dance over the frets so effortlessly.

“What time is it?” I ask when she finishes and sets aside her guitar.

“Almost ten,” she replies as Sarge nuzzles his cold nose against my hand. “Oh, and I let him out already.”

“We need to get you ready for the festival,” I say. “Or is Chloe picking you up? I remember her saying she would on account of security at the venue and all that.”

Devyn nods. “She’ll be here soon. Are you going? She’s got a special wristband for you. It’ll allow you to go backstage and everywhere else.”

“Of course, I am.”

“I’d love to see you there, Todd.” She pauses. “Oh, and she’s bringing four extra VIP wristbands, too, just in case your friends want to go.”

“Dax and Harlow are going to be watching their Sawyer and Alma’s kids for the day so I know they’re going,” I say. “I’ll find someone else to give the other two wristbands to.”

Devyn wraps her arms behind my neck, her lips so close to mine as she leans against me. “Promise me you’ll be there.”

“I promise,” I say, looking into her eyes. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

As she smiles at me, I can sense a hint of sadness in her gaze. “What’s wrong?” I ask, my hands on her waist.

“It’s just...I’m nervous,” she admits, her fingers twirling around the fabric of my shirt. “This is a big deal for me, Todd. I haven’t performed in so long, and I don’t want to mess it up.”

“You won’t mess it up,” I reassure her, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. “You’re going to be amazing, Devyn. Just like you always are.”

“I hope so,” she says softly, leaning into me. “I just don’t want to disappoint anyone.”

“And you won’t,” I say again, feeling her body relax against mine. “You’ll do amazing, Dev. You always do.”

By the time I arrive at the park, the music festival is in full swing. The air is thick with the smell of food, music, and the excitement of the crowd is palpable. Sawyer and Alma are already here as are Carl and his wife who got the two extra VIP wristbands. They’re really fans of Devyn now.

As I weave my way through the crowd toward the stage, I spot Chloe waving at me near the VIP section.

“She’s about to go on but she’s been looking for you,” she says as she points to the restricted area where security staff guard the entrance. “They’ll let you in.”

Five minutes later, I’m backstage just as Devyn takes her spot on the stage. Soft golden light from string lights illuminate the stage, casting a warm glow on everything it touches, including Devyn. She looks ethereal in a pink summer dress, her guitar in front of her.

“Thank you all for coming out tonight,” Devyn says into the mic, her voice smooth and confident. “I hope you enjoy this song as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

As she begins to play, I can’t help but be captivated by her. The way her fingers dance gracefully across the guitar strings, the passion behind her voice, the emotion in her eyes - it’s a sight to behold. Her long, wavy auburn hair sways gently in the breeze as she moves to the rhythm of the music, her green eyes shining brightly under the stage lights.

The first chords of her song send a wave of emotion through the crowd, and I see heads nodding in approval and smiles forming on faces. Her voice rises and falls with each lyric, her emotions pouring out through the melody, and I can sense how deeply connected she is to every word.

A woman sitting nearby wipes away a tear, clearly moved by the raw honesty in Devyn’s performance. As the song builds, so does the energy of the audience, everyone drawn into Devyn’s world. It’s almost as if they’re hypnotized by her voice.
