Millie’s phone vibrates on the couch and she glances at it quickly, looks back up, and picks up the device. She shoves it in my face and, sure enough, Alex’s name is there on her screen with at least three text messages. All pertaining to me.

I roll my eyes. “You know his assistant Brenda?”

Millie nods quickly.

“I walked straight into my own damn fantasy. Always thought of Alex bendingmeover his desk, you know?”

Her eyes get wider as I talk and I try not to laugh at the expression on her face. She’s loving this shit. Not that I blame her. If I wasn’t the one living the damn nightmare I’d probably be as eager as her to hear the details.

“I was bringing him dinner because he told me he’d be late. Wanted to surprise him. Dammit if I wasn’t the one who got the surprise as he had Brenda the bimbo bent over his desk.”

Her drink spews from her mouth, landing all over my lap, and I wipe it off gently as if I didn't just give her the craziest gossip. I bring my refilled drink to my lips, but think better of it and hold the glass up in the air with a smile.

“Cheers to cheating bastards!”

Millie is reluctant to bring her glass to mine, but indulges in my craziness for the moment. She knows I’m not normally like this. While my phone stays off, Millie eventually blocks Alex from hers, but not before sending him a colorful text in the process. My night ends with the room spinning and Millie dragging me to the guest room of her apartment.

* * *

It’s been a month since everything happened with Alex and he won’t stop calling me. I’ve been tempted to block him, but I feel if I do that he will get harsher with his efforts to talk to me and I don’t want that. The best invention was being able to mute a conversation, something I’m glad I’ve been able to do so I don’t have to get constant notifications from him.

Millie is sitting at her cubicle when I walk onto our office floor and she spins her chair around to face me.

“Still texting?”

I sigh and nod in defeat. It’s been a month, hasn’t he gotten the idea that we are done? I’ve been talking to my parents every week, trying to decide if I’m going back home to Willow Peaks. The thing is, I love my job here and I’ve made a great friend from it… but I can’t stand being here knowing that the reason I came is because of Alex.

“You need to block him, babe,” Millie says from next to me.

I blow out a rough breath, knowing that’s what I need to do, but something is holding me back from it. A month and a half ago I’d have said he wouldn’t do anything crazy, but he’s being erratic and unpredictable.

“I’m just worried about what he will do if I do.”

Millie’s eyebrows scrunch together, full of concern for me, and she narrows her eyes at me. “If he does anything, I’ll cut his dick off. Won’t know what hit him.”

And this.

This is why a part of me doesn’t want to leave. I’ve been living with Millie since the breakup, since I was living with Alex before that, and it’s been fun having her around all the time. We’ve binged Netflix shows, and have occasionally gone out to the clubs close to our house.

I’ve felt freer than I ever felt with Alex, considering if I ever went out with Millie alone he would’ve started a fight over it. That should’ve been another red flag I caught onto and the longer I’m away from him, the more I’m finding the blaring red lights surrounding our relationship.

Instead of wasting more time on the subject, I wheel my chair closer to my desk and get started on the work that’s been waiting for me over the weekend. That’s a perk of the job, having an entire weekend off. The only thing that sucks is all the shit that’s waiting for me when I get back on Monday mornings. I’m the part of the company that answers customer service calls, along with the emails left for us about issues people are having with our products.

My line rings and I mask my emotions, bringing out my best customer service persona, and pick up the phone.

“Hi, Ava speaking, what can I help you with today?” I ask, probably too cheerfully, but I can’t seem to bring myself to care right now.

The rest of the day goes by in a blur, and after dealing with more angry customers than usual, I’m beat for the day. That doesn’t stop Millie from bouncing up and down with excitement next to me though. I eye her warily, not sure what she’s so excited for.

“Go out for a couple drinks?” she asks while trying her best to give me puppy dog eyes.

I sigh. “Not tonight, customers were shit today and I just want to go lay down.”

She pouts her bottom lip, but relents after seeing how serious I am about it. I don’t mind drinking out occasionally, but tonight seems like a good night to turn in early. As if I needed something added to my plate, I get to my text messages with twenty from Alex added to the thousand others.
