Before we can mingle, dance music blares through the speakers set up by the DJ and Millie grabs my hand to lead us onto the dance floor. It seems as though everyone else has the same idea because soon enough bodies are bumping into one another every which way.

A server walks around the packed venue carrying glasses of mixed drinks and I snag one quickly before gulping it down. Millie follows suit before shaking her ass back onto the dance floor.

That woman has a stamina I only dream of having. A few dances and I’m beat, but she’s barely getting started. While I watch on the side, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, and I dart my gaze around the room before they land on Alex’s figure in a far corner.

He’s staring at me intently, almost angrily, and pushes from the wall he was leaning against. Before he can make it any closer, I move back onto the dance floor with Millie in hopes that he loses sight of me in the sea of people. Her back is to me, so I take a quick glance behind me and come face to face with Alex.

He’s glaring at me, but it’s replaced by hunger as his eyes travel down my small frame. The way his pupils dilate at the heels on my feet makes me fidget uneasily and turn away from him. But, of course, he won’t let shit go and snatches my wrist to spin me around.

As soon as I’m facing him, his lips crash against mine and it takes everything in me not to puke up the alcohol I’ve consumed so far. My fists reach up to his shirt and he takes it as an invitation to get closer, which only angers me more, and I push him away.

He stumbles back, bumping into the people behind him, then falls onto his ass. It doesn’t take long for him to spring back onto his feet, mouth set in a thin line, while clenching his fist at his sides. This isn’t good.

“What the hell, Ava?”

“Leave me alone, Alex. I thought I made that clear when I didn’t respond to you.”

He shakes his head. “You’re just playing hard to get.”

I feel the eyes of the crowd on us and my face heats with embarrassment, but it's the warmth I feel behind me that keeps me in check. Alex’s gaze flicks behind me, his anger dissipating for a split second, until a rough hand sits at the small of my back. My back tingles with awareness, but I don’t turn away from Alex’s cold stare.

He’s shaking his head at me. If this was a cartoon, this would be the moment when his character would have steam coming from his ears. That’s how mad he is. But does that stop him? Not at all.

“Come on, Ava, you’re really gonna do this to me?”

I cannot believe him. “Excuse me?”

He shakes his head at me, as if he has any right to be disappointed in me, and points behind me. “This is the way you want to play it?”

My back stiffens as soon as the man beside me opens his mouth. A man that I’ve only seen a few pictures of that Alex chose to show me, and I’d have to be blind not to see the attraction. Ryan, Alex’s best friend, is inching closer and closer to me with his hand resting on the exposed skin on my back, and he presses a small kiss to my temple.

“I suggest you back off from my girl,” he says with finality.

His girl?

I snap my head in his direction, but am struck speechless at the anger glowing bright in his eyes. Is he mad that Alex is trying to manhandle me, or that we are ruining his party? It has to be the latter.

As if sensing my stare, he turns his gaze to me and I gasp at the intensity of his hazel eyes. He carefully brings a hand to my cheek and leans into me, pressing his lips softly against mine. I think I’m melting. My eyes are wide open, not understanding what the hell is going on, but my lips are eager for more as I intensify the kiss.

Is it possible to crave a kiss?

Chapter4

Ryan

Her lips are soft, but eager.

I don’t know what came over me, one minute I’m talking to business associates and going over our numbers, the next I’m watching as Alex makes a fool of himself on the dance floor. As soon as I saw how uncomfortable the girl standing in front of him was, I quickened my pace until I was standing right behind her. It didn’t take long for Alex’s gaze to catch mine, then I called her my girl.

Nobody’s my girl.

Now this intoxicating woman is wrapped in my arms, kissing me as if her life depends on it, gripping the front of my dress shirt in her tight fists. My eyes are closed, paying no attention to the crowd around us, as I give her what she wants. The whisper of a whimper that escapes the back of her throat is my undoing as I deepen the kiss further, gliding my tongue between her parted lips and savoring the taste of her mouth.

I didn’t think it was possible to grow irritable when a kiss ends, but that’s exactly what happens when she manages to pull away from me. Her eyes are dilated, full of desire as she stares into my own heated gaze.

A throat clears in front of us and it takes every ounce of strength to force my gaze from this woman and narrow my eyes at my best friend. “Yes?”

His mouth opens and closes, wanting to speak but not knowing what to say, until he narrows his eyes at the beauty beside me. “This isn’t over, Ava.”
