“That is true, Angelo, you know I will.”

“Maybe you’re right, though, maybe I should stop her from going to work.”

“You shouldn’t do that,” I say. “She’s edgy enough. We don’t want to alert her to the fact that she’s being threatened.”

“The heightened security may be a bit of a giveaway. She’s in the same building as Marco, but I still don’t like it. She can work from the suites there, redirect her phone, and her assistant can come too.”

She’s not going to like this.

I start to open my mouth, but he cuts me off again. “Do you have any idea who else was at the party who may have been acting strange?”

No, absolutely not. I was too busy with my hands all over your sister’s ass.

“Nothing out of the ordinary.”

“Do you believe Toby? He could be being bribed.”

I shake my head. “He’s too stupid, and he was telling the truth.”

We walk toward Angelo’s office, and once we get there, he pours us both a scotch.

Just fucking tell him…

Angelo’s phone rings again.

“Hello, Doctor Varcoe.” He listens for a few moments, then sags in relief. “That’s great news, is she speaking?” The doc says something and Angelo nods. “I’ll be over within the hour. Keep me posted if anything changes.”

He glances up at me as he slides his phone in his back pocket.“Is Maria awake?”

“She is, the doctor confirmed it was a mini stroke and she hasn’t suffered any permanent paralysis or brain damage. However, we do need to discuss a course of action going forward.”

I sigh with relief. “Thank fucking God.”

“He’ll tell me more at the hospital, but it sounded extremely hopeful.”

“Do you want me to call Valentina and tell her the news? Roc can take her over to the hospital.”

“Yes, if you wouldn’t mind. I’ve got to get over to the hospital and call each of my brothers.”

“She’s going to ask questions, especially why Rocco and Dom are there.”

“Keep it sketchy, we’re amping up security, that kind of shit. I’ll break the news to her about moving offices, unless you’d like to do the honor?”

“Two birds with one stone, right?”

His lips twitch. “What are best friends for?”

“Well, at least she can hate on me for a while, even if I am just the messenger.”

He taps his phone, lost in thought. “Did anything untoward go on at the wedding? Like, except this Toby guy?”

Fuck.

“It seemed pretty normal to me. Nobody was acting weird, just rich people getting drunk over three-hundred-dollar bottles of champagne.”

A thud pounds in my chest when I think about what we did that night.

“I’ll meet you at the hospital,” he says, downing the last of his scotch.
