She shifts in her seat, albeit a little uncomfortably. “I was going to say that you think very highly of the Medicis, I can tell.”

“Yes, I do, very much so.”

“Especially Valentina.”

I look at her sharply. “I’ve known her since she was born.”

“So she’s like a sister to you?”

For fuck’s sake. I do not need that vision in my head, but I go along with it. “You could say that. I’m very protective. If you haven’t worked it out already, we all are. She’s the baby of the family. We get a lot of threats and just recently things have been on high alert, which I don’t need to get into with you, being you know all about it.”

She looks a little sheepish. “You’re a good guy, E.”

I grin. “Yeah?”

She nods.

I lean closer to her and say, behind the back of my hand, “What about Roc?”

She frowns. Then immediately starts to play with the ends of her hair.

Oh, good Lord. That was supposed to be a jibe.

“What about him?”

“I don’t know, Sloane, I’m pretty sure that I saw a moment between the two of you.” I play with her a little.

She rolls her eyes. “We were talking about my intelligent dog, that’s hardly a moment. Charlie is special, it’s a no brainer, everyone loves him.”

I try not to laugh out loud. “Right, you keep telling yourself that, princess. You may actually start to convince yourself if you say it enough.”

She pokes her tongue out at me and I shake my head.

As I’m about to leave, Rocco walks back in with two steaming mugs of coffee.

“Never thought I’d see the day that you brought coffee for anyone.” I lean in closer so only he can hear. “Sure you don’t have a bit of a crush.”

“Fuck off.”

I laugh. “I’ll be back in an hour to go over the footage at Valentina’s office.”

“Tell someone who cares,” he says, walking past me with Charlie on his heels.

I leave and head over to Valentina’s office. When I get there, the doors are wide open and the girls are freaking out.

“What’s going on?” I ask. Santino greets me first.

“Valentina got a delivery.”

“A delivery?”

By the look on his face, this is grave.

I don’t wait for an answer. Pushing the doors open, I stalk past the reception and into Valentina’s office. I can see immediately she’s been crying.

“Valentina?” I say, rounding the desk as she leaps into my arms.

“Oh, Enzo.”
