She turns to grab her purse off the bed. She’s got shit everywhere, but I only have eyes for her.

The dress shows off her lower back as well, and I’m pretty sure if she leans too far forward, everyone will have a pretty good view of her breasts.

“Don’t you have a shawl… or something?” I say, when she turns back to face me.

She frowns. “It’s the middle of summer.”

I nod down to her cleavage. “Are those things going to fall out?”

Her eyes drop to my mouth. “I don’t know, but you could find out.”

“Val.”

“What? I can’t help it if everything you say sounds… dirty.”

“I think we better go.” I retreat farther. I need to get the hell out of here because she is calling to me in a primal way that I can’t seem to keep under control.

I close my eyes momentarily, my back to her.

It’s going to be the longest fucking night of my life.

VALENTINA

Enzo helpsme out of the car, and I need the help because my reckless, but extremely flattering dress is givingme all sorts of dramas. I see his eyes divert from my plunging neckline as I steady myself on the pavement and link my arm with his.

I know his eyes have been all over my body, and I like it a lot.

“Mind your head,” he says, closing the car door, ever the gentleman.

“Thank you,” I reply with a smile. My dress isn’t frou-frou, but it will crease easily if I sit the wrong way, so I angle my body diagonally.

His scent lingers as he walks around the front of the car to his side.

If only he knew how much I wanted to devour him right now. The black tux really suits him.

“Do not tell me you bought that for this wedding?” I say, wondering where the hell he stashed a three-piece.

“No. I had it in my bag, but it needed steaming.”

“Thank God for the concierge.”

“I don’t scrub up too badly, do I?” he jokes.

Not that he ever looks scruffy, because even the odd time I’ve seen him in gym clothes, he still looks hot.

It’s good that he seems a little bit more relaxed. Maybe because it is late afternoon, and he has had all day to wake himself up.

We make our way into the church and take our seats. There’s an excited buzz around the room as guests take their places. I glance to the front as Dale stands waiting, looking like an extremely nervous groom.

I personally don’t know why people get so nervous and star-struck at their own wedding. Not that I would really know, of course, but it isn’t like you’re marrying a total stranger.

Would I have all this fanfare? Probably. I’ve always dreamt of a beautiful princess dress and all the trimmings. But somewhere in the back of my mind, I wonder if any of it really matters.

Sarah and Dale, and probably their parents, are dropping a whopping amount on this day, and while I’m sure they can probably afford it and it’s all been beautiful so far, it gets me to wondering about weddings as a whole.

A one-day extravaganza that costs tens of thousands of dollars. When you put things into perspective, that’s one hell of a costly party.
