The ride over doesn’t take too long, but the music cranks loud as we party on all the way over.

“You think the best way to get to him is to piss him off?” Bianca whisper-shouts over the music.

“I’m nottryingto piss him off, Bianca, it’s like it just happens. Okay, I was dancing a little sexy with that guy, and he went and stuck his hands on my ass. But I didn’t intentionally set out to do that.”

“You need to confront him once and for all, Val. It’s not healthy when things are like this. I hate to see you festering away.”

I laugh and guzzle some champagne. “Does it look like I’m festering?”

She tilts her head, narrowing her eyes. She knows me too well. “Before you get drunk and disorderly, talk to him.”

“Yes, Miss Birthday Girl!” I give her a salute, and we fall about laughing.

Oh, I plan on doing more than that, if liquid courage will allow me. Even though I’m supposed to be forgetting him and moving on, so maybe after tonight I’ll do just that.

Enzo opens the door for us at The Panic Room, and I reluctantly let him help me out of the limo.

He assesses my face, but I avoid his gaze.

Once inside, this time, I make sure I dance with just the girls, swaying my hips to the beat and lifting my hair up with my hands. I shimmy toward Bianca, and we laugh as we sway together.

When the lights flash and I inadvertently scan the room looking for Enzo, I see him at the back. His eyes are glued to me. He’s so goddamn sexy as he watches me.

I glance next to him toward Rocco who is standing stoic, not notably focusing on any one thing in particular.

I sway my hips even more to the beat, running my hands over my chest and holding them over my breasts before running them down my body. I move my hips up and down, just like I did when I was fucking him. His eyes go wide.

Why does he fight me?

I close my eyes momentarily and lose myself in the music, swirling around and around.

If there was a way to get him alone tonight to confront him once and for all like Bianca suggested, then I would take it. But there are eyes and ears everywhere.

I need to tell him that I’m sorry and that I was just trying to make him jealous.

In my family, weakness isn’t an option. Weakness isn’t power, it’s admitting failure.

It’s what I know.

My brothers aren’t bad people, but they only know what they know. What they’ve been taught. They didn’t want this life for me, but being a Medici isn’t just in my veins. It’s in my soul. It’s in everything that I do.

Pretty soon after arriving, the thrill of making him annoyed wears off, and I realize I’ve been a fool.

It’s almost two a.m. when we decide to call it a night. And it’s been fun.

Bianca let her hair down, and we all had a good time and a good laugh.

The only ones not laughing are Enzo and Rocco. They walked around tonight like they sucked on a bag of lemons. I know they’re security and all, but way to go making it super obvious.

Bianca needs a lot of help getting into the limo and asks Rocco if he’ll marry her.

He has no reaction as he places her in the car; that’s just him, always on the job.

Unlike his counterpart, he doesn’t let anything affect him. Maybe that’s what I love about Enzo so much; he shows it.

It may not seem that way at the moment, but I know if he didn’t want any other man hitting on me, that means he feels something. And another thing I learned tonight; I actually don’t want another man’s hands on me, only his.

While the limo drops the girls off one by one, I decide to test the waters and shoot Enzo a text.
