I fucking hate guys like that. I’ll be happy to fuck this guy up in more ways than one if it turns out he has anything at all to do with this.

I’m thrown out of my reverie as I watch Rocco.

Although he’s petting Charlie like his long-lost brother, it’s clear he and Sloane have a somewhat strained relationship. He was the one who interrogated her after all, though I highly doubt any torture device was used. She’d declare a pack of chewing gum.

I’m not even at my desk for an hour when Sloane calls me.

“Do not tell me that you got the information that fast?”

“I’m afraid not,” she says, though her tone sounds grave. “But I do have something on Toby Whinthorpe.”

I sit up in my chair, my interest piqued.

“What is it?”

“He texted Valentina.”

My free hand balls into a fist. “What?”

“Two nights ago.”

She never even said anything.

I don’t even want to wrestle with the reasons why she didn’t tell me this, so I push that aside for the moment. “What did they say?”

“I don’t think I should…”

“I plan on telling Angelo everything, trust me. When it comes to his baby sister, nothing is off limits.”

She pauses and then says, “It wasn’t pleasant.”

My gut wrenches. “What did he say?”

“I’ll send you the screenshots, but if I see his name on the side of my milk carton, just know I’ve got an alibi in place for you already.”

My lip curls up. “I knew there was a reason we hired you.”

“The same reason Angelo thinks he can pay me to be on call twenty-four-seven? I do have a life, you know. I’m not like this Vaughn character that has to be forced to take a holiday.” I let her babble on. I don’t want to be a complete dick and just hang up, now that I’ve got some intel, no matter how vague it is. I get the general idea. I also don’t believe she has much of a life, not from what Angelo has said. She’s a workaholic.

And Vaughn, yes, he was tricky to convince to take time off. In fact, I’m not convinced he’s gone completely AWOL; that isn’t his style. But everyone needs a break.

“Come on now, surely you didn’t just join our forces to look pretty behind a computer screen.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere.”

“Technically, I don’t need to flatter you, Sloane, you work for me.”

“Or for Angelo?”

“I am head of security, don’t forget. And you have a better office than me, go figure.”

“Should I be calling you boss? Sorry, I didn’t get the memo.”

“Very funny. How about you send me those texts.”

There’s a brief pause, then her voice drops to a whisper. “Will he be floating in the river Charles on the nightly news?”

I chuckle. “That’s not for you to worry about or to concern yourself with.”
