I need to signal her, but I don’t want anyone to hear. I dash over to the doorway, looking through the bars on the door, and I can’t see anyone in the hallway. I race back to the wall and hear the rattle of what sounds like chains. They chained her? I was restrained for the first few days, but they must have realized I was no threat to them.

I knock on the wall several times, listening for any movement.

Nothing.

I bang again. One. Two. Three.

I know she hears me because I can hear her.

Then, as I’m about to try again, I hear three knocks back.

Holy smokes.

“Can you hear me?” I call out.

Then I listen to the wall again.

“Who is that?” she calls back.

“I’m Mia. I’ve been kidnapped too. Are you okay?”

“Yes…I…I’m Kat,” she replies. “Those bastards fucking chained me to the goddamn wall. It’s gonna be their funeral. I’m Bratva. You from around here?”

“Uh, no.”

“We’re going to get out of here.” She continues. “It won’t be long. Every pair of eyes in this city will be looking for me.”

She sounds so confident that I want to believe her.

That little sprig of hope I’ve been clinging to blooms once more in my chest, even though I know nothing about her. Somehow the conviction in her voice leads me to trust it.

“I’ve been here for two weeks, give or take. My sister is involved with Angelo Medici. Do you know him?”

She curses in Russian. At least, it sounds like a lot of cursing. “Where did you hear that?”

“The bitch that kidnapped me told me everything, what my sister has to do…”

“Which is?”

“Kill him.”

Kat laughs. Actually fucking laughs. “Is your sister some kind of super spy? A ninja? An assassin?”

“N-no, she’s an auctioneer.”

More laughter ensues, though it sounds more hysterical than comedic.

“Oh god, you’re fucked.”

“Why would you say that?”

I hear her chains move again. “Angelo Medici is my Uncle’s long-time rival. They’ve fought over Boston for over a decade. Angelo is a ruthless, mindless barbarian. If she told you that was the plan, that isn’t good. It means you’re disposable now, since you know too much.”

“Is it too late to stop you talking?”

“Trust me, it’s better to know now so that way we can devise an escape plan.”

This chick is insane.
