We just didn’t think it was going to be this soon. Children may be a little early in the relationship for us, but we’re both happy about it.

And Dante’s ma is beyond ecstatic to have her first grandchild.

Dante squeezes my other hand and tells me how well I’m doing, again.

I’m absolutely exhausted. The sweat beads down my face as I try my hardest to push, then I glance over at Sage on the other side of the bed. She was at the hospital when Dante brought me in after my water broke.

“You can do it, Mia.” She smiles. “Just one more push.”

“I’m exhausted …” I pant, taking a final big breath and pushing with all I have while Dante squeezes my hand.

The rest happens in a rush, but it feels like in slow-motion at the same time.

Seconds go by, even as time also stands still.

Then I hear her.

It’s like everything I thought I ever knew before this very moment is null and void. I flop back against the upright pillows as the doctors fuss over her.

I stare down at our little girl wailing her lungs out.

“Ten fingers, ten toes,” Dr. Stevens announces proudly, looking up at us both as he picks her up and places her on top of me.

Dante’s eyes are like saucers. He glances at me as tears brim and freely roll down his face. “You did it, Mia. You really did it.”

“Wedid it.” I can’t hide my grin as I look down at this tiny little pink baby lying on top of me. “She’s gorgeous, oh, Dante!” I start to cry as he leans down to kiss me.

Sage beams down at us both as we caress our little girl. “She’s beautiful. You did amazing, Mia.”

I am laughing and crying at the same time. I never knew I could feel even happier than I did before this. My pregnancy was relatively easy once I overcame the morning sickness and the shock of it all. I always knew I wanted to be a mom, so it feels like the icing on the cake to have her in our arms.

The first Medici grandbaby.

“Have you named her?” Sage asks, stroking her head. She has a dark shock of hair sprouting already.

I nod as Dante just stares at our baby in wonder.

Dr. Stevens mentions something about cutting the cord in between our staring.

“Alia Elizabeth Maria,” I tell her. “We wanted to name her after both of our mothers. My mother was called Elizabeth.” It’s bittersweet.

At a time like having your first baby, I’ve never longed for my own mom more. God, how I wish she were here to witness this moment. Maria has been wonderful, of course, and so helpful.

“That’s perfect,” Sage says, watching on proudly. “Should I let your sister know? They’re eagerly waiting outside, so we’ll clean the baby first.”

We both nod at the same time. “Thank you, Sage,” Dante says between tears, wiping his face with his hands. “And thank you, Dr. Stevens, it was quite a dramatic entry, but we’re both thrilled.”

Dante looks down at me and lands a soft kiss on my lips.

When my water broke, we were having dinner at Gloria’s, the Medici family Bistro.

“True Medici style,” I laugh as Dr. Stevens smiles kindly.

“Would you like to cut the cord, Dante?” He asks.

Dante looks at me for confirmation, and I nod.

She’s the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen. I don’t want to ever let her go, but I have to in order for her to be cleaned up, myself included.
