Angelo curses as we all scramble to the next room.

I can’t see much in the dim light. Enzo moves closer to a chair in the corner with a woman tied to it, and she’s trying to wriggle free.

Marco shines a flashlight as Angelo approaches, but he immediately puts the safety on and shoves the gun into the holster around his shoulders.

That’s when I see her.

Right away, we all know it’s Mia.

I’ve only met Rayne a couple of times, but I’d know those eyes anywhere.

They’re exactly the same.

They’re a beautiful shade of green, like shining emeralds, startling me in place.

“Fuck, it’s her,” Angelo says. He bends down in front of the chair. “Mia, is that your name?”

She stares at him with big wide eyes, utterly terrified. She’s trembling.

“Are you Mia?” he attempts again, softer in his tone.

My chest heaves as I take in her panicked appearance and dirt-worn clothes. I immediately wonder if she’s been mishandled.

She nods, with tears streaking down her face. She has tape covering her mouth.

“I’m here to help you, Mia. Rayne sent us. I’m going to take this tape off now, okay?” Angelo says gently.

Her eyes flick up to mine, like I can offer some salvation.

Angelo carefully peels the tape from her mouth. She doesn’t react, she just stares with wide eyes.

“P… please,” she murmurs, “Please don’t hurt me.”

“We’re not here to hurt you,” Angelo says. “I’m a friend of your sister’s. You’re safe now.”

I also place the safety on my gun and shove it down the back of my jeans, kneeling beside Angelo. “We’re going to untie you, okay?” I say softly, as her eyes flick back to me.

In the dim, fading light of the day, I can see that she’s blinking rapidly. However, she’s beautiful….Fuck, she’s gorgeous.

I feel fucking sorry for her being left like this, to rot.

She doesn’t answer.

I slowly move around the back of the chair, take out my switchblade, and cut through the thick ropes. I hope she hasn’t been tied up like this the whole time.

From the looks of it, the chafing on her wrists doesn’t look too severe.

It’s hard to tell how hurt she may be. She’s in shock for sure, and she’s dirty as hell.

She starts telling Angelo something, but it’s hard to hear her because her voice is so low. She said there's another girl locked up. Enzo takes off to investigate, two soldiers behind him.

“Almost free,” I say out loud as I cut through the last part of the rope and let it fall to the ground. She brings her hands around to her chest and crosses her arms over her chest protectively.

She takes a sip of water from a bottle Rocco holds out to her mouth and asks where her sister is.

“She’s waiting,” Angelo tells her.

“We need to get out of here,” Marco says, and the urgency in his voice doesn’t go unnoticed.
