I stare at him in wonder. His face is so animated, his eyes bright when he speaks.

“It sounds so pretty.”

“Not as pretty as you.”

“What do you plan to do with it?”

“It’s for my home,” he says, his hands on my hips. “I’m going to build on it. It’s always been a dream of mine.”

I smile. “That…surprises me.”

“Oh, why’s that?”

I shrug. “I just thought you were a city boy at heart.”

He kisses me on the nose. “I’m not at all. It’s all for show. You’d probably be surprised to learn that I like being outdoors. I’ve always wanted a garden, to plant things, you know, like vegetables and herbs.”

I laugh. “I cannot imagine you in rain boots getting covered in dirt and soil.”

“Well, one day, you’ll believe it because it’s happening. I’m having the plans drawn up. I’ll run us a bath, and I can tell you about it, unless you want dinner first?”

I smile as he lets go of me. “No, I’m fine with a bath.”

He smirks, leaving me for a moment to go and run the bath water. When he returns, his sweater sleeves are rolled up to his elbows.

“What?” He says when I smile to myself.

“Nothing.”

“Do I have to chase you around this apartment to get it out of you?”

“Not if you plan on getting laid tonight.”

His eyebrows raise.

“Fine,” I go on. “I was thinking about what a nice guy you are and what’s the catch.”

He bites down on his lip, knitting his eyebrows together like he’s trying to comprehend that idea. “You think there’s a catch?”

I shrug. “I don’t know, I’m just being honest. I’ve never been with a guy like you before who actually wants to communicate.”

“My Ma raised me right,” he says, leaning one hand on the kitchen island. “I have a lot of respect for women after I saw what Ma had to do by herself with five children. It wasn’t easy. She taught me to treat others as I would want to be treated and the core values of family and being one unit. We may be mafia, little bird, but we’re a family first.”

“Are you always romantic?”

He scoffs. “Yes.”

“That’s hot.”

“It’s what any decent man should do, that’s trying to woo a woman.”

“Are you trying to woo me?”

“Isn’t that obvious?”

I smile, looking down, feeling shy all of a sudden. He reaches toward me and tilts my chin up with his fingers.

“Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. I’m old-fashioned in many ways. I’m not like my brothers. They live for this business. They rule the underworld, and I know that somebody has to, someone has to rule Boston and keep order. If it weren't for the Medicis, this city would be in chaos. Nevertheless, I also don’t have it in my blood as they do. I don’t enjoy the chase, the kill. I do what I have to do. I’ll always be mafia, baby, but I want so much more.”
