Until that day… the baby changed everything.

I always wanted kids with her, a bunch of them.

I don’t regret ending things back when we both went off to college, as it was for the best.

I will always want what’s best for her. Nothing will ever get in the way of that.

She’s doing everything she set out to do, except moving in with that piece of shit. She should be out having fun with her friends. Then again, Sage always did fall for the needy type. Like me.

Back then I was intoxicated by her. So much so, I knew it was unhealthy. I knew I had to let her spread her wings and fly.

I couldn’t be selfish with her, and boy do I regret that now.

I will fucking lay down my life for her.

Putting my head close to hers, I try to soothe her the best I can. “I just need you to rest,” I say softly. “I’ll come back in the morning, okay? Do you want me to call your parents now?”

She shakes her head. “Tomorrow. It’s late. There’s nothing they can do tonight.”

I pull back to look at her, kissing her softly on the side of the head. “All right, as long as you’re sure.”

“It’s okay, you’ve done enough, Fynn.” She smiles, but it doesn’t touch her eyes. Her beautiful face… all busted up. Her lip cut, her nose swelling, her eye almost closed. I know I’m not going to be able to stop myself from hurting him. “I should try to get some sleep.”

She won’t need to try, since the nurse gave her enough painkillers to knock her out soon enough.

I assess her for a moment and nod. “Okay. I’ll be back tomorrow, and I mean it,baby cakes. You don’t need to worry about anything anymore.”

She looks up at me, like I hold all the answers. “Will you quit calling me that?”

She’s been saying that since we were about ten years old.

“I will never quit looking out for you,” I tell her as we share a moment. I swallow hard. “Never.”

“I know, Fynn. You’re a good man.”

“Rest,” I tell her softly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She nods and closes her eyes as she sinks back into the pillows. She’s exhausted.

Standing up, I crack my neck from side to side.

This is just the beginning.

Angelo joins me as we leave the building.

“What a night,” I say, running my hands through my hair.

Angelo has the good grace to wait until we get outside of the double doors before he asks, “How do you want to play this?”

I glance at him, surprised he’s giving me the option.

“We need to find this fucker, and fuck him up.”

“Good.” He nods. “That can be arranged very quickly. I’ll have our guys grab him the minute he steps back into the house, if not before.”

I think back to my conversation from just moments ago. Sage doesn’t want him dead.
