What is he talking about?

“What is?” I don’t like the way the hair on my arms stands up suddenly. Like something is not quite right.

“That he would leave you all alone. Right under his fucking nose.”

He turns to face me, and I realize suddenly that I do know him.

Holy shit! No…

This can’t be. This isn’t possible.

I go to open my mouth, but no sound comes out. I’m literally frozen to the spot, my heart hammering in my chest, the heat rising up my neck and across my cheeks as I start to panic…

I stare at his magnificent form, those good looks I remember so well, that smile that in another life seemed so genuine, but now all it looks like a devilish smirk.

A trace of fear runs through me.

I suddenly forget how to breathe.

I’m reminded why being involved with a mob family is so dangerous.

This is why.

And nobody else knows. I’m stuck in this elevator with him, and I’ve got a horrible feeling that we are not going to the top floor.

Il Diavolo.

He was right here the whole time.

It all makes sense.

Suddenly, all the pieces fit together.

Everything he did, the chaos he created.

He was behind it all.

A horrible sense of foreboding washes over me.

“Are you okay, Sage?” He looks far from concerned as he grins. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

SAGE

My shock rendersme speechless for what feels like an eternity.

This can’t be.

Time stands still as recognition hits me and keeps hitting me over and over.

“You’re… you’re supposed to be d… dead,” I whisper, finally finding my voice, though it feels small, and I know it sounds like it.

He’s the one? The man behind all of this?

I’m almost tempted to reach out and touch him to make sure he’s real.

Where the hell did he even come from?
