Now that we’re upstairs, I take a few moments to collect myself.

I kneel before her, telling her it’s going to be all right. “I’m sorry, Sage, I’m just so angry someone hurt you.” I swallow my rage for the moment.

She nods, looking more like a frightened deer than the confident, smart, witty girl I grew up with. It never stopped her trying to keep up with us as boys, always wanting to get her hands dirty and not be kept inside playing with dolls.

To see that spark distinguished, it turns my stomach and makes me angrier than I’ve ever been in my life.

Somebody hurt her. They made her bleed. They broke her bones.

I know she’s not afraid of me, and I’m not the reason she’s shaking, but that doesn’t make it feel any better. I’m glad she called me; it was the right decision.

I close my eyes and try to only think of her needs right now. I need to do as Angelo says and calm the fuck down.

“I would never hurt you, Sage, you know that, right?” I need her to know.

Her deep hazel eyes look at me so soulfully that I feel my heart constrict in my chest. I hate seeing her like this, so fucking broken. It’s like she’s hanging on to every word I say. And the Sage I know never needed a man for any kind of validation.

She nods.

“Let’s go,” Angelo urges me, picking up her suitcase and her bags.

I pick her up again, and she’s like a lightweight in my arms, barely weighing anything.

We make our way to the hospital. Angelo drives at a fast, but at a more conservative speed than I did when I made my way to her.

I pace like a caged lion while she’s being examined. Hospitals make both Angelo and I uncomfortable, to say the least, but given the circumstances, there wasn’t a lot we could do. Sometimes calling it in is necessary.

An hour later, the doctor emerges. She’s an older lady, with a kind face, and a no-nonsense attitude.

“You’re Fynn Medici?” she asks, looking from her clipboard toward me.

I nod. “Yeah, I’m a friend. We brought her in.” I nod toward Angelo.

“Well, she’s in pretty bad shape. We’re checking her over now,” she tells us.

“How bad?” I ask, as I stop my pacing to listen.

“She has a couple of broken ribs, her knee is bruised and there’s a torn ligament. I’m hoping there will be no permanent damage to her eye, but I won’t know that until we do an x-ray.”

I take a breath, clenching my fists at my sides.

“Anything else?” I ask her, sensing there may be something else she’s not saying. Angelo glances at me.

“She has not admitted to being sexually assaulted, though when I asked her, she didn’t answer directly. She’s in shock at the moment. I’d like to keep her in for observation overnight.”

I swallow hard. “Fine.” I grit my teeth. Like it’s my decision to make or something.

Somehow, though, I feel fucking responsible for her.

Wait until her fucking parents find out about this.

“Is she close to her family?” the doc asks.

I nod. “Yeah, she’s from a good family, I know her parents. She just got messed up with the wrong guy.”

Doc nods sympathetically. I’m sure she’s seen this kind of thing time and time again.

“Can I see her before we leave?”
