“Jynx, I’ve got the cameras up for this place, come and see?” Ace says, and I hop up, moving over to perch on the edge of the armchair so that I can see the laptop screen.

Ace presses play, and we watch as Gerald walks down his hallway with a duffle bag slung over his shoulder, dressed in dark jeans and a shirt, which is so startlingly different from his usual suits that it takes me a second to get used to the image. He’s not trying to hide from the cameras, and he knows that they’re there, so much so that when he walks into the garage and grabs a set of keys to one of my grandmothers, or I should I say one of my faster cars, he looks directly at the camera and smiles, his eyes twinkling before he turns around chucks his bag on the passenger seat and then heads out of the garage.

“Well, at least we know for certain that he left of his own free will,” I reply, although, of course, something about this whole situation doesn’t quite sit right, and I don’t know why he felt he needed to leave in the first place.

“Yeah, we’ll figure it out, and I’m sure at some point we’ll have no questions left and only answers,” Ace replies.

“At least you know he’s safe,” Rome points out, having listened to our conversation and not needing to see the screen to know the outcome of us watching the surveillance.

I sigh, “Yeah, thank you, Ace.” I lean down and kiss him gently before hopping back up and heading over to the couch so that he can get back to hacking into his town's security and we can get an idea of what’s going on. Dealing with whatever Gerald is up to is going to have to wait, knowing how loyal he is to my grandmother; even though she’s gone, it kind of wouldn’t surprise me if he’s just gone on holiday until we’ve found out what we need to know and by the time we come back here, he’ll be here where he usually is silently running the house and making sure we eat and rest.

I’m trying to let his disappearing act not upset me, but it’s not that easy. Thankfully I do have other things that I can focus on right now, and I open up the folder from the bunker, hoping that there will be some helpful information in it. The more I flick through it, the more sure I am that, while interesting, nothing in the file is going to help us now.

Rome glances over at where I’m sitting between Mason and Rip and asks, “Anything interesting in the file?”

I shake my head, “No, nothing that will help us now anyway. It seems to be all leads on his possible whereabouts and dead ends. Any supposed sightings that she found out about, that sort of thing. She kept a record of all of it.”

Mal’s eyes widened slightly as he asks, “She never found him?”

“No. She didn’t. I think after so long looking and not getting anywhere, she assumed that he was dead.”

Rip frowns, “I’m sorry, Jynx.”

“That’s okay. I didn’t expect him to be alive anyway. I’ve always thought he was dead.”

Rip nods in understanding as I close the folder and lean back on the couch.

I snuggle down into Mason’s arms as Rip pulls my feet up onto his lap, and we watch a comedy TV show. I’m surprised to find that I can actually pay attention to it, and I’m not feeling anxious or impatient at all. I think it's because we’ve got a plan in place, and it's one that is hopefully going to sort out the problem that we have with the guy's parents as well as the mystery that surrounds my family.

I’ve always said that if I am ever in close proximity to their parents, I will deal with them; I think that my way of dealing with them is too good, though and I might have to call in a favour with D to ask Alaric to deal with them the legal way, I think life in a maximum security unit would be much more difficult for them to handle and what they deserve. I’ll make sure that D keeps the guys out of it, and he doesn’t need to know the connection that they have to the town, either. I think the fewer people that know about that, the better. Of course, that all depends on what we’re walking into, and I will get the guy's opinion on my idea. I’m not just going to decide for them when they very much deserve a say.

The fact is that they might want to deal with them the traditional way. One thing is for sure, we can’t leave them to roam free, and what I mean by that is that we can’t simply split them up and run them from town. From what the guys have told me about their parents, they are conniving, controlling, and vindictive if they’re left to their own devices. I think it’s pretty inevitable that they will end up coming back and trying to take over the town again.

Deciding that it’s probably best to ask them now in case I need to get D’s help, I say, “What do you guys want to do about your parents? Do you want to get rid of them the way your traditions dictate? Force them to stand down? Or I could get D to call in a favour with Alaric without letting on to your connection with them to have them serve time instead, he has access to some of the worlds most secure prisons.”

They stare at me for a second before Rome asks, “What exactly does Alaric do?”

“He works on the right side of the law but has far fewer limitations than traditional law enforcement does. He takes out the worst of the worst by any means necessary. If traditional law enforcement can’t handle it, his organization gets called in.” I try to explain it as best I can with the limited information I have about it; it’s all very hush, hush.

“Wow, okay that is not what I was expecting,” Rip replies, “and D is absolutely fine with being involved with him? why isn’t Alaric taking D in?”

“That’s kind of complicated, so Alaric used to be on the wrong side of the law with D and then shifted over when he was approached. D does work for certain government law enforcement agencies every now and then, just regularly enough to keep them from doing anything about the other things that he does.” I add.

“Fucking hell, that’s a bit complicated,” Ace mutters, still tapping away on his keyboard.

“Yeah, but it works for them, and D often helps out Alaric and the other way around too. They have a third best friend that joins them sometimes, too,” I add with a fond smile.

Chapter Twenty-One

“Ithink we’re going to have to see what happens,” Rip replies, answering my original question.

“Rip’s right, we have no idea what is happening back there, and we need to assess the situation before we decide what to do about it. I think, ideally, I would like them to be dealt with by Alaric so long as we could be kept out of it entirely, I don’t want anyone to know about our link to them, and I don’t think it’s a good idea for anyone to know that you are the heir to the last family, not until we know more information,” Rome replies thoughtfully.

“Yeah, I agree with that. If it works out and we don’t end up having no choice, then I want them permanently behind bars,” Mason agrees with Rome, and the others all make sounds of agreement, even Ace, who is still staring at the laptop screen, his brows furrowed with concentration.

“Okay, just let me know, and I’ll make the call. I also agree with you, and as far as I’m concerned, you guys are the only ones who need to know about my possible link to the fifth family.” I reply.

After that, the guys start to talk about random things that really have no consequences to what is happening now and I snuggle back down onto the couch and watch the TV, my mind spinning with questions.
