“Thank you!” Ace says with genuine gratitude as he practically buzzes with excitement.

Rome chuckles and then tries to get everyone back on track as he asks, “Was it just my father that was involved?”

Ruth shakes her head, “Landon was the only other one of our children that we saw. I don’t know if that’s because they were the only two who knew we were down there or if the others just couldn’t be bothered to come down.”

Malachi shakes his head, “I’m reasonably sure that they genuinely thought you were dead. Mom used to get really sad when it was the supposed anniversary of your death.”

Mason nods, “He’s right. She was always in a foul fucking mood around the anniversary. If they knew that you were still alive, then I don’t think that she would’ve reacted like that, especially since it was seen as a weakness, and it caused massive rows between our parents.”

Ruth tilts her head slightly as she contemplates their words, “Well, I guess the only way we’ll know for certain is if we ask them.”

“That brings us onto the next thing. I know it’s a long shot, but do you have any idea who could be killing off the parents? According to the staff, all of them seemed to genuinely shocked when the first one of them died, and we don’t know whether that was a one-off killing that then the parents decided to take matters into their own hands, thinking it was one of the others and start going after each other as well,” Rome adds, thinking out loud.

“It sounds confusing as hell, but I get what you mean; if, say, our parents thought that Silas was killed by Rip’s parents or Ace’s, then they’d go on the defensive and plan to kill Rip and Ace’s parents before they got to them,” Mason tries to clarify.

“Exactly,” Rome replies and then looks back at Dexter expectantly.

Dexter shakes his head, “I’m afraid not. We know a few bits a piece courtesy of Thomas, but it was incredibly dangerous for him to keep feeding us information, so he only told us the most important things, like, for instance, that they had killed every extended family member in the town including your uncles and aunts, their brothers and sisters. He also told us the way that they were treating you,” anger clouds his features as he becomes truly intimidating. “We were also told about when Ace managed to hack all of the systems to gain his inheritance and all of yours, allowing you all to escape together.”

They all look so incredibly proud, and I can tell that the guys don’t really know how to react. With parents like theirs, it's not like they were often on the receiving end of proud looks.

“So really what we need to do is to see what’s going on at the twins house, we need to see what the other parents are up to and if they are planning anything against the other ones, or even if they’re still trying to send people after us,” Rip suggests.

Hugo, Rip’s grandfather, frowns as he asks, “What do you mean to send people after you?”

Before any of us can answer, Mason Senior adds, “We were under the impression that when you got away from this place, they left you alone?”

Malachi shakes his head, “No, they sent people to try and kill us at least twice a year like clockwork. We sent them back in pieces.”

Lillian, the twin's grandmother, laughs, the sound like tinkling bells; however, her words contradict the innocence of her laugh entirely, “Well, there’s no mistaking that you are all our blood. Good job, boys, although I would like to get my hands on our worthless children, what the fuck do they think they were playing at going after their own children?”

She sounds utterly horrified that they tried to kill their own children, and it’s a sentiment that is matched by the others as they all become angry.

Dexter says to the room in general, “It probably had something to do with Silas. He was like a poison and damn fucking charming with it as well. He was so good at weaving truth with lies to make it believable, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he told them that you were all plotting against them and they had no other choice but to act.”

Ruth nods, “He would’ve had proof, as well, that wouldn’t have been real but would have been convincing enough to trick them.”

Silas sounds truly diabolical, and I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like to have known him; it sounds like hell.

“In order for you to know for sure that you’re safe, you need to get access to the other houses, then?” Francis double-checks.

Ace answers her, “Yes, but in order for me to get access to their cameras, which are all on closed networks, I’d have to get extremely close to all of their houses and that’s not safe, especially since we know for sure that the twin's parents have upped their security a lot.”

“With a little bit of background information from you guys, I could probably get in unseen. I’m quite good at that,” I offer with an excited smile because, honestly, nothing has challenged me quite as much as this would, and it would be fun to test my skills.

However, the resulting sharp looks that I get from all of my men make that idea fade rather quickly, and I catch Roberta’s eyes as I roll my own and end up making all the women in the room laugh.

“Don’t worry, dear, our men are the same, and we only have to deal with one. I imagine you’re going to have to get very good at asking for forgiveness rather than permission,” Roberta winks.

“Don’t encourage her; Bobby,” Hugo chastises, a twinkle in his eye as he winks at me as well.

The guy's grandparents are brilliant.

“Don’t even think about it,” Rome tells me firmly, and I stick my tongue out at him, although just this once, I concede.

“I have a solution,” Cecil offers, sipping his fourth drink and looking quite happy about it as he watches his wife lovingly.

“Care to elaborate, Cecil, or just check out your wife?” Mason Senior asks him, sounding mildly amused and like this is a regular occurrence.
