Dexter smirks, “I don’t think we have anything to worry about, they’re practically bouncing with excitement to get going and head into potential danger, and they are all armed well enough that they could go to war.”

I smirk; Rome clearly gets his observational skills from his grandfather.

Roberta chuckles, “Oh, I am more than aware of that. I just want to go along for myself. I’ve missed doing jobs.”

“I’m sure that we can get out and get up to some mischief soon. We just need to stay put for now,” Cecil replies with understanding.

“We’ll be back as soon as we can, hopefully with some good news, and then we can start making a plan to sort this shit out,” Rome tells them.

We all understand how hard it would be to be inactive if they love what they do as much as we do, then I’d be itching to throw myself into some danger as well.

“Remember to call the house here if you need any help working the software for the cameras,” Cecil reminds Ace.

“Will do,” Ace replies, “I’m not too familiar with the older systems although I did study them briefly.”

Cecil nods and looks proud, “Smart, move on your part to study the old systems. Your father thought it was beneath him and completely unnecessary.”

Ace rolls his eyes, “Yeah, that sounds like him. See you in a bit.”

With that, we say goodbye and stride back through the gaudy house and out the front door heading straight for our car. The sun is just starting to set, so it’s the perfect time to go.

Once we’re all seated and on our way, I say into the silence, “Well, I sure as shit didn’t expect any of that to fucking happen.”

Ace snorts, “Tell me about it. I don’t think any of us could’ve fucking predicted that. I honestly thought they were all dead.”

“Our mother definitely thought they were,” Mason replies with a frown.

Rome nods, “I think that it’s entirely possible that all of your parents accept, for maybe a couple of them thought they were dead. My father wouldn’t have wanted to share the findings in the safe that rightfully belonged to all of them, so he most likely told them that they were dead to ensure that he didn’t have to.”

“I think that makes the most sense. Especially because they were enemies, at least when we were growing up, but they clearly worked together on certain things. It’s definitely a weird fucking relationship that they all had and one that I don’t think they understand completely, which means we never have a hope of understanding it.” Malachi replies thoughtfully and makes a good point.

“We’re going to have to come back to the grandparents later. We need to make a plan for how we’re going to do this,” Rome interrupts.

“Did it occur to anyone else that the person who is killing the parents off is also aware of the cameras and the control room at the Hawthorne estate and is using them to find the times to kill them and the easiest way to access them?” I ask.

My question is greeted by shocked silence, and I just sit and watch an array of emotions cross their faces as they mull over my words and then Mal, who’s sitting next to me, shocks me as he turns my face to him and kisses firmly, leaving me breathless.

When he pulls back, he says, “I love how your mind works.”

“Thanks,” I smile, feeling proud of myself.

“No, it hadn’t occurred to us,” Rome clarifies as he continues checking the mirrors while we all keep a lookout to make sure that we’re not being followed.

“If that were the case, that would point to the person behind the murders being one of our parents because no one else would have known that it existed, surely?” Malachi asks.

“And it would be one of the parents who got rid of the security room in their house and not just bricked it up,” Mason adds.

“So we need to ask the grandparents and see if they know who that could be,” I add.

“And we need to be extremely careful at the house now that there’s a possibility that someone could be at the house and someone who is capable of taking out half of our parents. They were well trained and not easy to take down, so this is someone that poses a massive threat.” Rip cautions us.

“I’m hoping that I’m wrong, if I’m honest because I was hoping that I could have a quick look around the house while we’re there to see if I can find anything else out about my father and the rest of my family,” I add.

Ace squeezes my shoulder from where he’s sitting behind me in the very backseat of the car and says, “I don’t think any of us expected you to go to the place that could give you so many of the answers that you’re looking for about your father and expect you to leave, Blue.”

“Really?” I ask and then add, because they’re starting to look slightly offended, “I understand that it's more important to find out about the threat to us all, and I can wait to look around the house.”

Understanding crosses their faces, and Rome replies, “Yes, you’re right, it is important, but so is finding out about your past and your link to this place. We wouldn’t even suggest that you go to your ancestral home and not have a look around.”
