Chapter 1

Una

“Can you dothat?” Junior asked, blinking up at me from his little brown eyes. Freshmen always looked like lost puppies, no matter the situation.

I patted his head. “My dear, it’s what I do. Have we got a deal?”

Junior’s hands shook as he looked over his paper one more time. “Yes. This is what I want. How soon can you—”

I snatched the paper out of his fingers and turned it over. “Sign and date.”

Biting his bottom lip, he steadied his pen as he did as told. Little freshmen were always the most obedient. They also paid full price, every time.

“Pay up,” I said, holding my palm out flat and curling my fingers up in a ‘give me’ motion. I only accepted payment upfront. If they didn’t pay, I didn’t play.

Junior reached into his jeans and came up with some bills. “How much was it again?” Even his voice shook when he spoke. Boy needed to find some confidence, or he’d never make it in this world.

Instead of answering, I snatched whatever he had and shoved it into the pockets of my black cargo pants. “That’s fine,” I said. Then I took his pen and signed the contract right under his name. “I’ll see what I can do for you. In the meantime, scram.”

He didn’t have to be told twice. The freshmen were quick learners. Either that, or Junior wasn’t all that keen to spend more time in my presence.

I didn’t blame him. I didn’t want him around any longer, either.

As soon as he left, I folded up the contract and put it in my back pocket for safekeeping. Not that I needed it. Once someone signed, I committed it to memory. Working his favor into my tight schedule would be the biggest issue.

But I would get it done. Mainly because it dealt with him having a bully, and I didn’t stand for that. No one bullied Teller kids on my watch. No Fairview freak would get away with it if I had anything to do with it.

The only problem was that it would have to wait until I got my car back. Having to be reliant on other people for transportation was the worst, and I despised it.

Slipping my phone out from another pocket, I shot off a text to Flow.

Me:Need pickup. Outside the fields, ASAP.

As usual, it took three whole minutes for him to respond. If he wasn’t so tech skilled, I would have ditched him long ago. He could hack into a computer in no time, but took light years to answer a simple text.

Flow:I gotchu, boss. On my way.

Which, in Flow terms, meant I had at least ten minutes, if not more.

Not wanting to hang out under the soccer field bleachers any longer than I had to, I grabbed my bag and headed out. Knowing I had time, I climbed the stairs to the bleachers, ready to sit on the bottom row and wait.

I had only made it to the top of the stairs when shouts and grunts from the field caught my attention. Twenty or so sweaty guys threw gear and dirty towels into their bags, where it most likely would stay for the next three weeks, becoming a science experiment even Mr. Chung wouldn’t want to work on.

I pursed my lips, watching them all shove each other around like cavemen. I let out a sigh, upset at myself for not timing my exit to be before practice ended.

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the one person I wish I hadn’t. Obviously, I knew he would be here. But part of me had hoped he already headed inside to his office to do whatever it was he did there for an extra hour after practice ended.

Not this time, though. I rolled my eyes as he started toward me. Not me technically, but my direction, as this side of the bleachers was also next to the main gate from the field to the parking lot.

I glanced around, trying to see if there was some way out of this scenario, but I was at a loss. The only place I could go was under the bleachers again or into the parking lot to wait for Flow. But I couldn’t get to either of those places without being spotted.

“Una?” he called, lifting his arm to wave at me as if it was the most normal thing on the planet.

Three varsity players surrounded him, each one of them turning their heads to stare at me.

I did not wave back. I did not smile. I did not do anything to acknowledge his existence or the fact that he called my name.

Instead, I stared down at my phone, my lips curling into a sneer as I read the text in front of me.
