The change of pace threw me off, but in a good way. She looked incredible. She looked ready to snuggle in on the couch and watch a movie.

I would have done anything to be on that couch with her.

“Well, that happens sometimes,” was all my brain thought of to say. Everything I was about to throw out left as soon as I saw who the car belonged to. Now, I was at a loss for words. I also was clueless as to why she was there, why she blocked me in, or why she was telling me about her friends.

My heart pounded in my chest. I couldn’t stop staring at her, drinking her in. She was like a magnet, drawing me to her. I physically restrained myself from walking over and reaching out to touch her by hooking one ankle around the other.

“I lost two deals because of Aria,” she added, as if it should mean something to me.

It didn’t. But it kind of made sense. “Okay? I mean, yeah, it was kind of a cruel thing to do to your best friend.”

She narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips. “Oh yeah? You have an opinion on it too?”

Now I wasreallylost. “I just said it.” What on Earth was going on with her? “Why are you blocking me in?”

Una didn’t move. She didn’t blink. She looked like a statue standing there against her door, staring me down as ifIdid something wrong.

I fixed her car. Then I gave her space. I didn’t ask for a thing more.

“I didn’t say thank you. My friends said that was rude.”

The friends who were all pissed off at her? Were they mad because she didn’t thankme? Did she tell them I did it?

Why did I always come up withmorequestions in life when around Una?

“Okay?” I debated just getting back in my car and waiting for her to leave eventually, but didn’t.

“So, yeah.”

Yeah? “You didn’t actually say it, you know.”

She glared at me, as if I ruined her big plan. But I knew something about having a grand plan ruined, so I wasn’t letting her off easily.

“Thank you,” she said sarcastically.

I smiled. It must have been hard for her to say that, and I appreciated it. But I kind of wanted to mess with her. She already seemed annoyed. What was a little more?

“Not too shabby. Needs some work on the delivery, but it’s good enough for now.”

“Great.”

We stood there for a beat, silent, each one waiting for the other to say something. She started off strong, telling me about all her issues, and then ended with the mic drop. Why was she still standing there?

Just before I ducked back into my car, I thought of something.

“Hey, are you hungry?”

“What?” She looked confused, like I had been a bit ago. This entire interaction was odd, but I wasn’t one to pass up an opportunity.

“I’m going to La Madrina. I’m starving and my family isn’t home right now. So it’s dinner out for me. If you’re hungry…”

Her face scrunched up as if she smelled something bad. But her arms uncrossed for the first time and she stood straight up. “Go to La Madrina… with you?”

She didn’t have to make it sound like it was the worst thing she could have ever done.

“We could sit on opposite sides of the restaurant, if that’s what you want. But, if you don’t have any other plans…”

Slowly, her head bobbed up and down, like she was actually considering it and agreeing, but didn’t want to say so. “We’ll see.”
