She was yards away from me now, having sprinted back in a hurry. But she swiveled around and started jogging backward, a beaming smile on her face. She shrugged. “No ref. No rules.”
I narrowed my eyes and brushed a piece of grass off my shorts. A second later, I dashed after her at full speed.
Una’s eyes widened as she saw me rushing toward her. She spun around quickly and started running again, but it was too late. I caught up to her before she got to the ball, wrapping my arms around her waist, and tackling her.
I rolled in the air, so I landed on my back with a thud. The way I snatched her from the side, combined with my roll, meant she ended up on top of me, chest to chest.
We both froze for a second, panting and gasping, staring like we had never seen each other before.
The only thing that filled my mind in that instance was kissing her. I wanted to kiss hersobad. Every square inch of my body craved her. There would never be a better moment than right then, but I couldn’t push her. I didn’t want to rush her.
She held everything in her hands.
Including my heart.
A second later, Una pushed away from me and took off down the field. I scrambled to my feet, trying to get my head back into the game.
I couldn’t stop thinking about kissing her, though.
She rushed the final few feet, hurling the ball toward the edge.
“Goal!” I shouted, throwing my hands up and fist pumping the air. “Woo!”
I jogged toward her with a smile on my face. She turned, her hands on her hips, a smug grin waiting for me.
As soon as I reached her, I slipped my arms through hers, wrapping them around her back, and spinning her in the air like I had after she got the hole in one.
We were both laughing and breathing hard by the time I put her down. I took a step back, my hands resting on her waist delicately.
“Teach… me… some… moves, huh?” she said between breaths.
The look on her face was like none I had ever seen before. With beads of sweat pooling at her brow, her cheeks flushed, and her entire body relaxed, she had never looked more gorgeous than she did right now.
She was relaxed, at ease, and… happy.
I sucked in a deep breath, still staring at her. She shifted, looking at the ground between us.
“You said no rules, right?” I asked quietly, not wanting to break the moment.
“I did.”
“Nothing stopping me from doing this then,” I whispered as I slid my hands up her arms, around her cheeks, and pulled her toward me.
She jerked, stumbling over her feet, but I leaned forward, catching her body with mine. My thumbs glided across her face as my lips landed on hers.
I pressed into her, fireworks exploding in my brain as I closed my eyes and held her tight.
She stood as frozen as a statue at first, but after a second, she relaxed, her hands gripping onto my wrists.
And then, she kissed me back. She planted her feet, rising on her toes just slightly, gripping my arms for support as she opened her lips, allowing me in.
It was an out-of-body experience; one I couldn’t believe was happening. It was everything I had been longing for. But somehow, it was better.
We stood there, the two of us completely free from our real lives, from the microscope of school, from who people expected us to be.
Here, we were just us. Right now, we were where should be.
Together. With her pressed against me, my lips on hers.
