“I’ve been out here for, like, ten minutes,” I nearly roared.

“I was in the shower,” she said as if I couldn’t tell.

“You need to keep a leash on him,” the woman behind me told Taylor.

She peeked over my shoulder at the neighbor. “Don’t worry. I will.” Then she pulled me inside and closed her door. “Why were you out there shouting like an asshole?”

“Because you weren’t answering the door after you specifically told me you were home, and I wasn’t leaving until I saw you.”

“So you could get arrested?”

“If that’s what it took.” I shrugged. “Why didn’t you leave a message when you called?”

Had it only been a few hours ago? Felt like a lifetime.

“Because I didn’t know what to say, and I’d rather do it in person.”

“Do what in person?” I asked, readying my arguments for when she cut the cord completely.

“Talk to you, you idiot.”

“Don’t call me an idiot,” I said, following her down the hall to her room. “Not after all the shit you put me through today.”

“Iputyouthrough?”

“Yeah.” I leaned against her dresser as she picked up a small towel and dried her hair. “I’m busting my ass to make things better, and you’re here luxuriating in a twenty-minute shower.”

“I’m stressed!”

“You’re stressed? I’m fucking stressed.” I combed my fingers through my hair, making more of a mess of it, then plopped down on her bed. “All you had to do was leave a quick message or send a text to let me know where I stood, but no, you couldn’t even do that. Forced me to drive to Philly to—”

“You went to Philly?” She froze, and her towel slipped to the floor, leaving her body gloriously naked in front of me.

“Yeah,” I told her pussy. “I went to go kiss the ring.”

“Eyes up, Hargrove.”

“Then put some clothes on, Novak.”

She slid into a pair of loose-fitting pants and a T-shirt.MyT-shirt. I tugged her toward me by the drawstring on her waistband. “I talked to Barbara.”

“As in Barbara, my grandmother?”

“Yes. Keep up.” I hooked my hands around her thighs, guiding her to stand between my legs. “I told her my intentions for you.”

She combed her fingers into my hair. It felt like it had been ages since she’d touched me. “Which are?”

“That I want to be with you. Wherever you are. In Philadelphia or here or wherever. You’ve got me on a leash, and I’m following your lead. I love you, Taylor.”

She fought a smile. “Not so broken, then?”

I shook my head. “Just a little bent.”

“Like me.”

“Exactly like you.”

She moved to kiss me, but I stopped her with a palm on her face, and she blindly whacked at me. I dodged her hands. “There’s more. You’re like a drunk badger.” She landed a punch to my shoulder, and instead of trying to hold her off, I towed her to my lap and held her still with her back to my chest. “Be a good girl and stop fighting me, so you can hear the rest.”
