Taylor narrowed her brows at me while Ethan draped his arm over Laney’s chair. “We weren’t speaking of the devil.”

I shot my gaze to my best friend, Benedict Arnold. He merely grinned at me.

“I happened to notice these two on my way to the bathroom and thought they might want to join us,” Laney explained as if no one at this table knew it was all a ruse. She gestured for the sisters to sit, and Taylor dropped into the open chair next to me, her cinnamon-and-flower scent wrapping around me in a vise grip. I refused to look at her. Refused to concede that I had trouble keeping my attention off her.

She didn’t greet me, but Kennedy did, smiling widely. “Nice to see you again. And happy birthday!”

I nodded at her. “Thanks.”

“Taylor, Kennedy, this is my fiancé, Ethan,” my sister said, and he shook their hands with a pleasant smile. “I hope you don’t think I’m too forward.” Laney leaned her elbows on the table. “But Dean has told us so much about you, Taylor, so when I saw you, I had to invite you to sit with us.”

Taylor’s mouth quirked in a half smile. “I’m sure everything he’s told you about me is how awful I am.”

“Pretty much,” Laney said.

Taylor opened her mouth, and the sound that came out was…a laugh. I think. I’d never heard it before.

I didn’t know demons laughed.

“So, Kennedy, you’re Taylor’s younger sister?” Laney asked, steamrolling the conversation. As always.

“Yeah. She’s been in such a bad mood lately, I had to drag her out of the house.”

Taylor sneered at her sister while I eyed my own. Two-on-two here. I didn’t like it.

“I’d never been here before,” Kennedy went on. “And I didn’t know a band would be playing.” She elbowed Taylor. “We were both so surprised to see you up there, Dean.”

Taylor stared at me over the rim of her glass. Looked like some kind of vodka drink. I smiled at Kennedy. “I’m a man of many talents.”

Taylor snorted.

“Well, it’s so funny because did you know Taylor used to want to play in a band?”

That had me looking at Taylor. “No. I did not know that.”

“Kennedy,” Taylor warned.

“She used to be obsessed with Alanis Morissette and tried to learn to play the harmonica, but she was so bad.” Kennedy giggled, either unaware or uncaring that her sister clearly wanted to murder her. “She had real long hair and would walk around the house singing… What was it?” She stared off into space. “That one about going down on you in a theater.”

“‘You Oughta Know,’” I supplied, and Kennedy snapped her fingers.

“Yes! So funny.”

“So funny,” I agreed flatly, staring at Taylor, who I thought was trying to light me on fire with her mind.

“Do you guys know any Alanis songs?” Laney asked.

“No,” Ethan answered, “but we could learn.”

And I wanted to light him on fire with my mind.

Kennedy reached her hand over to lightly pat my arm. “So, how old are you today?”

“Thirty,” Laney answered before I could. “We’re twins.”

Kennedy lit up. “Shut up. No way. I always thought it would be so cool to have a twin. Do you guys, like, read each other’s minds and stuff?”

Laney and I both shook our heads, but Ethan nodded. “They do.” When Laney slanted her gaze to him, he shrugged. “You do. You have these conversations with your eyes, and I don’t even know if you realize it.”
