“Obviously.” I leaned my elbow on the car door, rubbing my forehead. “I’m taking you home.”

“But this isn’t…” She flapped her hand between us. “You have to go back to the office.”

“Why?”

“Your car. This is my car!”

“I can hear you fine when you use your inside voice.”

She growled.

“Though, you could work on your inside voice too. Make it less screechy.”

“I hate you so much,” she said.

I hit her with a smile and patted her knee. She batted at my hand.

“I’ll take you home and get an Uber or something back to the office for my car,” I told her once she settled down. “Does that satisfy you?”

She didn’t answer. Only folded her arms over her chest.

“You live on Mills, right?”

She slanted her head in my direction. “How do you know?”

“Stalking.”

She rolled her eyes.

“I don’t know,” I said. “I heard you talking about it before. How does anyone learn anything about a person they work with?”

“We aren’t friends. We don’t talk.”

“A normal person would say, ‘Yeah, Dean, that sounds great. Thank you so much for driving me today. It was so nice of you.’”

“I’m not a normal person.”

“Oh.” I forced a laugh. “I know that.”

Our argument faded into silence as I drove to her apartment on the other side of town. West Chester, Pennsylvania, was a college town, so housing was always expensive and in demand, but Taylor’s building wasn’t part of the short-term rentals college kids used. It was what looked to be an old mansion renovated into separate apartments.

“Wow,” I said, taking in the gray stonework and arched doorway.

“What?” She met me out front of the car, seeking shelter under my umbrella.

“It’s gorgeous.”

“The building? You like it?”

Her tone of surprise irked me, and I afforded her an annoyed look. “Old buildings can be gorgeous.”

“I know. I agree with you. There’re too many luxury apartments and new, cookie-cutter homes. I like things that have history and a story to tell.” When I huffed, she wrinkled her nose. “What?”

“Nothing. I…I agree with you.”

She clucked her tongue. “Is that the first time?”

I stared off into space. “I think so.”
