“I’m on my way to Jordan’s.”

I slumped back against my chair, my face up toward the ceiling. “Jordan’s. Why are you going there?”

“I’m moving back in with him.”

I breathed through my nose, mentally reminding myself to unlock my jaw. “You are? I didn’t know you were back together.”

“Maybe this gas leak in your apartment was kismet. Gave me the push to give him a second chance.”

I rubbed at the spot below my jaw, finding the tender patch of skin where Dean had left a mark. “Is that what you want?”

She laughed. “Well, I don’t want to stay in your freezing apartment building.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, giving up on my attempt to relax my muscles, and instead sat upright. “I thought we would share a hotel room, but…” I sighed. “What about your job at the bar?”

She snorted. “I hated that place. I quit.”

“Kennedy.”

“What?”

My sister, the reason I had to start dyeing my hair already. “I wish you’d…”

Be more responsible, was what I wanted to say, but seeing as how I let my coworker pull my hair and finger-fuck me this morning, I didn’t feel like I had much of a leg to stand on when it came to making good decisions.

“Text me later,” I told her. “And let me know if you need anything.”

“Yes, Mom,” she droned then hung up with a quick, “Love you, Titi.”

“Love you, Kenny.”

When I flipped my cell phone to the table, Dean was on me immediately. “What the hell is going on?”

“My apartment building has a gas leak in the main line, so unless I want to freeze my ass off for the next week, I need to find other lodging. And my sister is apparently back with her ex-boyfriend and is on her way to the Poconos, even though she doesn’t currently have a job.”

After a few moments of him staring at me with a wrinkled brow, he stood up. “Okay, let’s go.”

“Go?”

“Yeah.” He slid his arms into his coat then held mine out for me to do the same. “You’ll need to get some things from your place, right?”

“I…uh…”

He pushed me toward the door, where his sister and newly minted brother-in-law were speaking to a few people. With his hand on my back, he explained, “We’re cutting out early. Taylor has an issue at her apartment.”

Laney turned concerned eyes on me. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything will be okay, but it’s a gas leak.”

“Oh, man.” Ethan nudged his glasses up his nose. “Sorry about that.”

Laney flung her arms around my neck. “I’m so glad you were able to celebrate with us.”

“Thank you for inviting me,” I said, and she pulled back from me, smiling.

“I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of each other.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I waited as Dean said his goodbyes to the happy couple and the rest of his family, before heading outside to his car.
