He waved his hand at me. “Get in here, Novak.” He didn’t wait to see if I’d obey him. “Anyone ever tell you, the gaping like a fish thing is real unattractive?”

I got into bed beside him. “Anyone ever tell you, insulting someone you just had sex with is rude?”

He pulled the sheet and comforter back up to cover us. “Aw, did I hurt your feelings?”

“No, but I’m going to hurt you in a minute if you don’t shut up and let me sleep.”

“So violent. After I gave you three orgasms.” He turned on his side, the weight of his arm settling over my middle.

“It was two,” I corrected.

“Three, including the one from this morning.”

I hummed and hunkered down. “Never thought you’d be the cuddling type.”

“Never thought I’d enjoy cuddling a rock, but there’s a first time for everything.”

“Never thought I’d like being covered by you, but there’s a first time for everything.”

I felt him smile against my neck. “Paper beats rock every time.”

“That’s what you think.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

Dean

For the second morning in a row, I woke up with my arm around Taylor’s waist, my face pressed against her shoulder, and my dick rubbing against her ass. Wasn’t the worst way to greet the sunrise.

But it was still weird, and I wasn’t quite sure what the new day would bring. More fighting or fucking. I wouldn’t mind a bit of both.

As I shut off the alarm on my cell phone, she shot up, the hair at the back of her head like a bird’s nest. I sniffed a laugh at her bleary-eyed blinking. The pillow crease across her cheek. The limp slap at my arm.

“Since I’m a gentleman, I’ll offer you the shower first,” I said, scooting up the mattress to rub a tired hand over my face and hair. We had been up well past midnight last night, and already, I could tell this Monday was going to be harsh. “I have a meeting scheduled with Raber anyway, so I’m not going to the office right away.”

A shadow dimmed her eyes, and I knew she still had lingering resentment over being removed from the Mackenzie case, but I couldn’t do anything about it. And I certainly wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to head it up. Sure, I’d fuck Taylor into next week anytime she’d let me, but there was still no truce where the promotion was considered. No matter what was going on between us, I couldn’t forget I had a job to do.

She turned to look at me, and when I thought she’d hit me with some feisty one-liner, she merely offered me a ghost of a smile and rubbed her cheek on her shoulder like she was shy. Except that couldn’t be right. Taylor Novak was anything but shy.

“You all right?” I asked.

She curled her knees up, wrapping her arms around them, her lips pursed for a moment as she studied me. I didn’t drop my gaze. This was the moment right here. It would decide if we’d move forward like nothing happened or continue this cat-and-mouse game.

“I suppose you’ll try to convince me what we did was a terrible idea,” I said.

“And I suppose you’ll try to convince me what we did was an outlet for all our pent-up aggression,” she countered.

Neither of us did either. Instead, she shifted closer to me, and I reached out to her mess of hair and combed my fingers through the tangled knots.

Problem was, this was a terrible idea. Having sex with my colleague. Really fucking great sex, but she was my work frenemy. That was a fact. And I didn’t shit where I ate. That was rule number one. Yet, here I was, running my fingers through her hair, likethiswas a fact. An inevitable conclusion.

“I hear there’s something called conditioner,” I said, and she flicked my thigh.

“My hair’s so fine, it always gets knotted at night. That’s why I packed my silk pillow.” Then she pointedly eyed my pillows with the regular old cotton pillowcases.

“You could’ve brought it in here.” Followed by the rest of her stuff. A fact. An inevitable conclusion.

“I wasn’t thinking,” she said with a yawn.
