Alistair appeared concerned, while Gareth looked annoyed. Alistair wore black slacks and an equally dark shirt, which I supposed was good; if he got blood on him, it wouldn’t be too noticeable. Gareth, on the other hand, wore dark blue jeans and a gray polo, not exactly murder scene clean-up material.

Once they reached me, I bent my head towards the house. “She’s inside. It’s… it looks pretty bad, Alistair.”

Gareth’s nostrils flared, but Alistair set a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it once and saying, “We’ll handle it. Show us.” He followed me in the house, Gareth at his heel.

I led them inside and guided them to the living room, where Brianna was, still very much naked and on top of the corpse, still trying to get to the bones—only she’d moved on from the ribcage and now was working on the boy’s face, peeling back the skin as she hummed along to a tune only she knew.

“Holy shit,” Gareth muttered, freezing in his tracks.

Alistair whipped his head in my direction and gave me a look that told me he found this suspect. I had to say, “I found her like this. I think she’s been drugged or something. I don’t know. All I know is I had her phone tracked, and when I saw she was here, I came straight over, thinking…” I shot a glance at Gareth and lowered my voice, “I thought it was him. Her friend’s car is in the garage out there. I think we found the person responsible for their disappearance.”

I drew my gaze back to Brianna, my stomach churning when I watched her peel back the skin on his face to get to the skull underneath. Looked like she’d drawn a line straight down the center of his face with the switchblade, deep enough to cut to the bone.

I didn’t think I’d ever seen a messier sight. Even when I’d killed my brother, well, it wasn’t at all like this.

Alistair’s stare was on Brianna, as was Gareth’s, and now mine. We all three stood side by side, watching her in silence. I didn’t know what was going on in their heads, but I knew what I was thinking.

No matter what happened, no matter who she chose, it didn’t matter. We were going to have our hands full no matter what.
