Shivering under the caress, Talia resisted the urge to squirm. As his fingers moved over her flesh before she felt him draw away. Standing, she felt his gaze on her before he stepped away.

What ever he was going to do wasn’t going to be sexual assault. She exhaled a pent-up breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

She tried hard to concentrate on what he was saying behind her. His voice was low as he spoke to his vampire servants.

“Only the best for my bride. No, nothing that will leave thick scars.”

Tasting her own pulse, she tried so hard to will the lock undone. Her stomach rolling as bile rose. Her magic firmly locked behind whatever wall the drug enforced in her.

“Yes, that’s the one,”

The room was so quiet. Every step that he took reverberating in her ears.

“After this punishment is done, all will be forgiven and you will once again be held on high. So I have spoken, so it will be.”

“So it will be,” the watching court repeated.

The sound and the quick cutting pain were simultaneous. Crying out as the whip lashed across her bare back like a hot poker. Talia struggled to think past the pain that had lanced its way into her flesh. Her breathing was too fast in her ears as she heard the leather being pulled back again.

He had whipped her!

The crack of the second blow echoing through the courtroom as she screamed. There was no denying the warmth of her blood as her back spilt open under the lash stroke.

Despite the agony, she struggled against the manacles, tears streaming down her face, attempting to think logically. She wasn’t going to scream next time. This time, she would take it. Breathing hard, she forced herself to focus on the tiny cracks in the tile. She wouldn’t give the damn blood hungry vampires the satisfaction of her screams.

Bracing as he pulled the whip back across the tiles. Talia bit her lip, her eyes squeezing tight as the crack sounded again.

But this time, it didn’t strike her back.

His weight held mere inches off her. Hyde’s entire form covering her, his arms perfectly in line with hers, his hands inches away from her face as his legs moved over hers. Holding completely still, the lash striking his back; he didn’t flinch as the leather cut through his shirt into his skin.

“I got you” His voice growling low into her ear. She had never heard a more reassuring sound in all her life.

Staring at his hands, she almost sobbed his name.

He had come.

“Hyde” Dravens voice was eerily calm, a little curious. “What are you doing? She is not one of yours. “

His chest vibrating against her back, his head turning to the side to answer.

“Following your orders,”

Talia gasped for breath and closed her eyes as more tears swelled.

“I ordered you to interfere?”

“To serve and protect,”

“I guess I did.” Draven’s mocking laugh made Talia’s stomach tighten. “What a good puppy you have there, my dear. Shall we see how loyal he truly is?”
