“I’m sorry,” she said, turning out the light and laying back down on his chest.

“You’re not going to ask more questions?” She heard the surprise in his voice.

“I assume you’ll tell me if you want me to know.” She didn’t need an explanation to guess what had happened — the warrior standing in front of his father’s house, the scars hidden by ink.

Clearly, there was something between Roman and his father.

Something very bad.

She understood now why she felt such an affinity for him. They were both wounded, both wearing the scars of their lives on their skin, in their bones.

“Do you do this often?” she asked before she could stop herself.

“Do what?” he asked.

She laughed. “Sleep with women you hardly know.”

It was a lighthearted question but there was nothing lighthearted in his answer. “I’ve slept with many women I hardly know.” His arms tightened around her. “But I’ve never donethis, Ruby. Have never feltthis.”

It might have been a line, suave words he trotted out to make the women he fucked feel better in the hours before they realized they’d never see him again.

But she didn’t think so.

ROMAN

He woke to the sound of ringing, the sun casting soft early light across the bedroom where Ruby slept in his arms.

It took him a few seconds to recognize that the sound was coming from his phone, ringing from the pocket of his jeans where he’d discarded them the night before.

He slid out from under Ruby, trying not to wake her, then reached for his phone, Max’s name displayed on the screen.

“What is it?”

“He’s on his way up,” Max said. “The ex. He has the little girl with him.”

“Fuck,” Roman said.

“Want me to come up?”

“No,” Roman said. “I can handle it.”

“You left your gun in the car,” Max pointed out.

“I don’t need a gun to handle it.”

Roman disconnected the call and turned to face Ruby, awake now and staring at him from the pillow, looking even more beautiful with sex-tousled hair and sleepy eyes.

“Your ex is on the way up.”

She sat up like a shot, her eyes filled with panic. “What? He’s supposed to take Olivia to school on Thursdays!”

“Max said he’s on his way up with Olivia,” Roman said. “What do you want me to do?”

He wanted to let her take the lead, but he really hoped she wasn’t going to suggest he hide in the closet.

He wasn’t about to hide from the fucker who’d hurt her.
