All of it carried the weight of Olivia’s welfare, and Ruby carried that weight alone.

Brooke reached for her hand. “I know. So? Now that we knowI’mnot the judgy one, what happened?”

Ruby laughed. “You know that guy I told you about? The one who got into it with Adam at Roasted last week?”

“Yeah?”

“Well… he showed up again, asked me out, and since it was Adam’s night, I said yes.”

Brooke’s face broke into a smile and she nudged Ruby’s shoulder with her own. “You said yes?”

Ruby nodded. “And it was so nice. He was so nice. We talked for hours and it just felt…easy, you know?”

Brooke nodded and removed the lid on her coffee to take a bigger drink. “So far I’m liking this story. Continue.”

“I invited him up and — ”

“Wait!You invited him up?!”

Ruby tried to suppress her smile but couldn’t. “That’s not what this story is about.”

“Well, it should be,” Brooke said. “How was it?”

“It was…” Ruby remembered the way Roman had looked at her, his gaze hungry as it roamed her body, nothing but sheer lust in his eyes. She could still feel his hands on her, his mouth on her pussy, his massive cock buried inside of her. And then, the confidences they’d shared afterward in bed, the way he hadn’t wanted to leave. The way she hadn’t wanted him to leave either. “It was amazing. Like… mind-blowingly amazing.”

Brooke clapped her hands together. “Omg, yes! I’m so happy for you. I’m going to want way more details later, because as you know my own love life is currently as vast and empty as the Sahara.”

Brooke had broken up with her girlfriend the year before and had been too busy since taking the job with David Chang to date.

“Wait…” she said, seeming to remember that Ruby hadn’t come to crow about the amazing sex she’d had the night before. “Did he turn out to be a dick?”

Ruby shook her head. “Adam came home early with Olivia.”

Brooke’s eyes went wide. “Fuck.”

“That’s one way of putting it,” Ruby said.

“Did Adam lose his shit?” Brooke asked.

Ruby considered the question. “It could have been worse. Olivia was there. And that’s the part I’m really kicking myself over.”

“Why? She didn’t, like, walk in on this guy eating your pussy or something right?” Brooke said.

“Oh my god, Brooke! No!” Ruby shook her head. Only Brooke. “Roman’s driver called up to tell us Adam and Olivia were on their way up.”

“Excuse me,” Brooke said, “hisdriverwaited out front all night? What does this guy do for a living?”

“Some kind of business,” Ruby said. “We haven’t gotten into the details.”

“What do you mean you haven’t gotten into the details?” Brooke asked. “You said you talked for hours.”

“We did. About Mom and Adam and Olivia. About his family. I didn’t ask about his business. I didn’t want to seem like some gold digger,” Ruby said. “Can we go back to talking about whether I’ve scarred my daughter for life?”

Brooke rolled her eyes and hopped off the worktable. “Oh my god, Ruby, you’re so dramatic. How would you have scarred her? By letting her see a man standing in your living room?”

She moved back to the dress on the other table, picked it up, and carefully started fitting it over a mannequin.

“I just… I didn’t plan to introduce Olivia to anyone on our first date,” Ruby said. “I want to be responsible. Careful.”
