“Please what, baby?”

“I don’t know. I just…can’t take anymore.”

“You’ll take this, and then I’ll let you rest. That’ll be your reward.”

“In your arms.”

“In my arms.”

Her gaze clung to his face, made sure he was telling the truth. She couldn’t believe how crazy needy he was making her. Not childlike, but open and more female and yes, possibly more fragile, than she’d ever been in her life.

When he finally let her fly, she did it with harsh, wrenching cries that seemed to go on forever. It all came forth, all the poisoned agony of the day, rushing forth in one volcanic explosion of need, her body bucking, gushing, voice raised in a wailing song.

When she at last spun down, it was from a feathery, drifting world, into the solid world he controlled. He slowly removed his fingers as she twitched and whimpered. He set aside the ring, the Hitachi wand, and took the belt off her wrists. Then he put his arms around her, adjusting them so they were lying in the bed together.

She was feeling some embarrassment about how she’d reacted, how she’d fought him, cried, been unable to control anything. But he wouldn’t let her worry about that. “You were everything you needed to be, Les. It’s all right. I can handle whatever you are.”

He put his mouth to her forehead and spoke against her skin. “Rest awhile. Then you can finish your packing and I’ll take you home.”

Chapter Twenty-One

After they left the condo, Brick proposed they grab some lunch before hitting the road. He went for comfort food, pulling into a Sonic. After he ordered a double cheeseburger for him, a small burger for her, and a large fries to share, he had another suggestion. “How about I call Tish about Mrs. DaCosta’s request? That way if you want to ask her something I haven’t thought about, you can jump in.”

She was a little worn out after what had happened in the bedroom, so she hadn’t said much. But now, after thinking it through, Les nodded, wrapping up her partially eaten burger and drawing her feet up on the edge of the seat. As Brick activated the handsfree, she linked her fingers over her knees and settled on her hip to face him.

She noticed he had Tish programmed into his phone. Fabulous.

Stop it, Les told herself.

“You okay with this?” he asked. He noticed far too much about her sometimes. She made a face at him.

“Of course I’m okay with it. If you were going to have a friends-with-benefits relationship, I’d definitely want it to be with a woman who could be on the cover of Forbes and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.”

“They want me for the same month, so I’m having a hell of a time choosing,” came a female voice through the speakers. “The SI shoot is in Bimini, though, so I’m leaning toward that one.”

“Should have warned you,” Brick noted. “Tish has a habit of waiting a beat before she talks, because she’s usually up to her ass in work when she answers her phone.”

Les heard the woman chuckle. The sound belonged to a bedroom in Bimini. She could almost see her tangled in cotton sheets, while a lover, standing before an open-air view of a whispering ocean, would pad back to her side, irresistibly drawn by the throaty invitation.

“Somebody’s got to stay on top of justice in our fair city,” Tish said. “What’s up? You checking on me again? I’m all good now. Plus Richard’s checking on me, too.”

Under the playful smugness, Les’s female ears caught the sound of a woman a little off-balance, in the right ways. That, plus the fond warmth in Brick’s eyes, reassured her. It was unfettered pleasure for a good friend’s happiness.

“I like hearing that. I’ve got my friend Les with me on speaker, and I was wondering if you had two minutes for us to run a legal hypothetical by you.”

“Who’s Les?”

“The drowned rat stalking you in the parking lot,” Les said.

“My friend from North Carolina,” Brick said, shooting her a look. “The medical student.”

“Oh.” Tish’s tone became noticeably more intrigued. “I’ve been wanting to meet you. How long are you here?”

“We’re heading home to her family’s place in North Carolina for Easter. But I hope she’ll be visiting again soon. I took her to Mick’s party the other night. We had a good time. Didn’t see you there.”

“Richard took me out for dinner. Decided to negotiate our first session over some sushi. Did I miss anything?”

“Lisa got her first fire flogging.”
