A pretty teenage girl stepped away from the group and walked over to Peyton. “You’re the girl from the stands, right?”

“Um, yeah.” Peyton glanced around, taking note of several people looking her way.

“I thought so. That was the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen,” the teen gushed.

“I agree.” Peyton still couldn’t believe Ryan had left the field and run into the stands to talk to her. He’d said she was more important than baseball.

“Can I have your autograph?” the girl asked.

“What? Why would you wantmyautograph?”

“Because you are total goals. Not only are you dating the hottest guy in baseball, but he like totally claimed you on national television. It was hot,” the teen spouted. “I want to be you when I grow up.”

Peyton looked over at Kendall for help. How did she politely decline giving a signature for something as ridiculous as who you fell in love with?

Thankfully Pete and Gonzo walked out of the change room, and the teen’s attention was pulled to them instead, and Peyton was able to slip back against the wall as a rush of fans moved forward to get autographs from the players.

After the fans moved away, Pete walked over to Kendall, gave her a kiss, and wrapped her under his arm. “Ryan is going to be a bit still. He got called into a press conference.”

“I’m not surprised. He was the shit,” Kendall replied. “Wasn’t he amazing, Peyton?”

“Unreal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a no hitter on tv let alone in real life. It was pretty awesome.”

“Seems you’re good luck,” Gonzo said to her.

“I don’t think luck had anything to do with it. He’s an outstanding pitcher,” Peyton replied.

“Yeah, but he doesn’t pitch too many no hitters. No one does and they sure as hell don’t usually do it in the final game of the season.” Gonzo high-fived the first baseman as he walked past.

“Div champs,” Hernandez yelled, and the group of waiting fans roared, engulfing the player into the crowd.

Pete leaned against the wall with Kendall resting against his chest and looked at Peyton. “So you came.”

She knew Kendall wanted her here, but did Pete agree? Or did he think his best friend was better off without her? Peyton steeled her shoulders and looked him in the eye. “I did.”

A smile curled up the edges of Pete’s mouth. “Thank god because my boy’s been a bit of wreck without you. I’m glad you decided to give him another chance.”

“We’ve still got some stuff to figure out, but yeah, me too.”

“He’s been an idiot, but he’s a fast learner, so he’ll be worth the trouble. It won’t take too long to get him housebroken,” Pete told her.

Kendall snorted. “I still don’t haveyouhousebroken.”

Pete kissed the side of Kendall’s neck. “Yeah, but I don’t have a big fancy degree like your brother, so you gotta cut me some slack.”

“You’re an idiot.” Kendall laughed.

“I know, babe, but I’m worth the effort too.”

“Some days,” Kendall teased.

Watching Kendall and Pete together gave Peyton hope that she and Ryan really would be fine. Maintaining a relationship with a professional athlete had its challenges, as they’d already learned. And the way some of his teammates cheated scared the crap out of her. But Ryan wasn’t Andy, and he wasn’t her dad.

On that front, she knew she could trust him 100%. Yeah, they had stuff to work through, but what they had was worth fighting for.

Finally, Ryan exited the change room with Brandon Sims, and the remaining fans erupted with cheers as they swarmed the two men for autographs. Ryan’s gaze found hers over the crowd, and he smiled before mouthing sorry as he gestured toward the fans.

She waved off the apology. After the amazing way he played tonight, she had expected nothing different. He’d been amazing.
