“Yeah, it’s kind of why I reacted the way I did when I found out Andy was married. I learned pretty early from my dad once a cheater always a cheater. I could never be as forgiving as my mom. I saw what that did to my her over the years.” She shook her head slowly and exhaled. “I would never.”

“Sorry, I was such a dick about all that.”

“It’s fine. You didn’t know me and had no way of knowing what I was like.”

“Still.”

“Forget about it. Let’s just get tonight over with.” She stopped at the doorway to the ballroom and faced him. “Are you ready to fawn all over me because we’re so in love?” she asked and batted her eyelashes at him.

“I don’t do love, babe. But I’m ready to fawn all over you because I want to fuck you. Does that count?”

Peyton burst out laughing. “I guess it’s gonna have to.” She patted him on the chest. “You really are a sweet talker, Ryan. My heart’s all a pitter pater.”

He winked. “Just keeping it real.” He threaded his hand through hers. “Show time.”

Scanning the crowd, he spotted his sister and Pete sitting at a round table with a couple he didn’t know. He gave Peyton’s hand a slight tug and led her in their direction, weaving past people, nodding when necessary.

“Ryan.” His sister Kendall jumped up from her seat. She threw her arms around him and whispered in his ear. “Thank god, save us, please.”

Kendall released him from her hold and turned to his date. “Hi Peyton, nice to see you again. Love those pants. I wish I could pull off that style. My legs would look like little stubs.”

“That’s because your legs are little stubs,” Ryan mocked.

Pete walked up behind Kendall and wrapped his arms around her waist. “I happen to love your legs,” he murmured before placing a kiss against Kendall’s neck.

“Thanks, baby,” Kendall replied, then turned to Ryan and sneered. “See, he likes my legs.”

“Among other things,” Pete said as he nuzzled Kendall’s neck.

“Yeah, I’m not even gonna—” There was no way he was touching that one. As happy as he was for the couple, the idea of his best friend and sister still wigged him out a little when he really thought about it.

“Who needs a drink?” Ryan asked.

“I’d love a glass of white,” Peyton said.

“Me too,” Kendall said, holding up her almost empty glass.

“I’ll go with you,” Pete said.

As they walked to the bar, he glanced back at Peyton and Kendall as they sat down at the table with the unknown couple. “Who were you sitting with?” Ryan asked.

“Some rich skybox guy.”

“Coach is friends with someone who owns a skybox?”

“Doubt it, I think Kirsty invited all the bigwigs to make a show.” Pete stopped in front of the bar and rested his elbows on the bar top. “So, how are things going with Peyton?”

How the hell did he answer that? “About as well as can be expected I suppose. We aren’t killing each other.”

“I thought you said she didn’t know Andy was married, so what’s the problem?”

Ryan looked back at the woman in question. Peyton threw her head back and laughed at something skybox guy said to her. “I don’t know, nothing really. We just seem to rub each other wrong.”

“I find that hard to believe. You can get along with pretty much anybody.”

“Usually, yeah. I don’t know, man, something about her turns me into an asshole.”

“Seriously? You? Shit, I really gotta get to know this woman.” Pete rubbed his hands together. “This is gonna be so good.”
