“Eh. People suck.” She laughed. “But I did a cool zombie tattoo today, so that was fun.” She grabbed her phone and pulled up the photos she’d taken. Handing her phone to Vika to check them out.

Her sister’s face scrunched up. “Oh my god, that’s disgusting. Why would someone want that on their body?”

Kia eyed the pictures. Pride flowed through her body as she looked at her art. It was disgusting. She’d captured the rotting flesh look perfectly. It really looked like there was an oozing open sore covering the entire thigh. She grinned at her sister. “Gross, hey?”

Vika shook her head. “I wouldn’t want it, but it is ridiculous how talented you are.” Vika’s fingers touched the screen like she could feel the skin. “That’s crazy.”

“Thanks. I’m happy with how it turned out.” Taking the phone back, Kia shoved it in her pocket.

“So Jeff is home tonight?”

“Yeah, he’s got two days off, then the home opener on Friday.” She took another sip of her drink.

“Tell him thank you again for the tickets for Sunday. We’d never be able to afford to take the kids to a game, let alone sit in those seats.”

“Yeah, it should be fun. Max is looking forward to it. We had a lot of fun watching them in Phoenix, but from what Jeff says that’s nothing compared to the atmosphere on opening weekend.”

“Aunty Kia. Come jump with us,” Layla called.

Allowing her eyes to scan over to the playground again, she smiled as she watched Max running around the jungle gym with Alex close on his heels. Knowing he was safe and having fun, she stood up and headed toward her nieces.

“Duty calls,” she said to her sister.

Kia wandered across the grass to where the girls were playing. “Alright, what are we playing?” she asked the girls. After an elaborate explanation of the jumping combination, Kia hopped in.

The next thing she knew, she heard a child scream. Her heart lurched. Max. Turning, she saw Max and Alex running away from the playground. A man with a camera aimed at them ran after them.

Oh, hell no. Kia lunged out of the skipping ropes and in a burst of speed she didn’t know she had, she raced toward her son. Why had she gone so far away from the boys? When she’d joined the girls, it had only felt like a couple hundred yards, now it felt like miles. Finally reaching them, she grabbed the boys and pinned the cameraman with a glare. He stopped and aimed his camera at her. No way this was happening. She stared at the boys. “Go to Aunty Vika,” she told Max.

“I want to stay with you.” Max’s bottom lip quivered.

“I’ll be right there. Go to your aunt.”

Vika came up behind her. Sensing her sister’s support, she said, “Max, go with your Aunty Vika, please. “

Max eyed the reporter who stood several feet away from them, still snapping pictures, then wrapped his arms around her waist. “I want to stay with you.”

“I know, baby, but I need you to go with your aunt while I talk to that man.”

“Come on.” Vika wrapped her arms around the two boys and pulled them into her body.

Without taking her eyes off the reporter, Kia stormed toward the man. She stopped in front of the reporter. “Take my picture again, I dare you,” she growled.

The reporter held up his hands. “Jeez, lady, chill.”

“Chill? You just chased my son, and you tell me to chill?”

“I didn’t chase him,” the man scoffed.

“Give me the pictures.” Kia stepped toward the man.

“No.”

“Give me the pictures. They’re children, and you had no right to take their picture. What is wrong with you?” Fueled by some weird maternal kickass instinct, Kia stepped in, so she was nose to nose with the reporter. “Delete the pictures, or this camera will permanently become part of your anatomy.”

“Yeah, right, lady.”

Without thinking, Kia reached out and grabbed the guy’s balls and squeezed as hard as she could. The big man dropped to the dirt. “Delete the fucking pictures,” she snarled.
