“Stop calling him that, please.”

“Sorry. Smitty,” he grumbled the name like it left a foul taste in his mouth.

Kia’s back stiffened. “What is your problem with Jeff?”

“Nothing. I just—” He shrugged. “I don’t know…” He trailed off, distracted by a woman walking past their table.

“Oh my god, seriously?” She laughed.

Austin’s head snapped off the woman’s ass and back to her. “What?”

“You know how you were hoping to go home with me tonight? That won’t be happening, especially if you can’t be a little more subtle about checking people out.”

“I wasn’t checking her out.”

Was he for real? She snorted. “Okay. The sear marks on her ass from your eyes say otherwise.”

He winced. “Sorry.”

“It was a good ass and I’m not into girls. If I noticed it, I can’t expect you not to, but seriously you could learn to be just a little subtle. The whole gobsmacked thing is disrespectful.”

Austin stared at her. “You know it’s really screwed up that you don’t care if I check people out.”

“Why?”

“What do you mean, why? It’s weird.”

“I disagree. We both have eyes. Of course we’re going to notice if someone is attractive. There’s a big difference between noticing and doing something about it. One is understandable, the other is a deal breaker.”

His forehead creased as he stared back at her. “Most people get pissed if their partner looks at someone. It sure as hell would piss me off if you did it.”

“Okay, now that pisses me off. It’s okay for you to look, but not me? That’s some bullshit.”

“It’s not okay for either of us.”

Kia sputtered out a laugh. “Oh my God, do you hear yourself? The whole reason we’re even having this discussion is because I busted you gawking.” She eyed the man across the table from her. Was he right and she was the weird one for not caring? She didn’t think so. She cared that he’d been disrespectful in the way he’d checked the woman out for sure, but not that he actually looked. “Look, you know how I feel about cheating and jealousy and all that.”

He sat forward in his chair. “I would never cheat on you. I was just looking.”

“I know, that’s what I’m saying. So can we just agree that if you’re gonna look, be respectful not only to me but to the other woman as well? No one wants some rando dude eye fucking them without their consent.”

“I wasn’t eye fucking her. I glanced at her ass.”

She arched an eyebrow at him. “Eh.” Taking in the look on Austin’s face, she fought back the lick of annoyance. Somehow he was making her into the bad guy here because she had different views when he was clearly the one in the wrong. “Do you really want to fight about this, or can we just agree it was disrespectful and you’ll knock that shit off?”

The muscle on the left side of Austin’s jaw twitched. “Agreed.” He picked up his menu and opened it. “For the record, you know how sexy I think you are. That chick didn’t even come close.”

“Now you’re just full of shit.” She laughed.

“Nope, I much prefer a woman who’ll order a burger and get her hands dirty.” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively.

The fact he thought that might work just made her laugh, but props for effort.

The server stopped at their table and set a beer in front of each of them. She looked at the beer in front of her. Damn, he wasn’t wrong. That woman probably ordered fancy cocktails with umbrellas or some shit. She was a beer girl who drank wine to class it up. “You’re still not getting invited over.” She picked up her beer and took a long pull.

Austin threw back his head and laughed. “We’ll see.”

Kia set her beer back on the table. “So what were you saying earlier about me having more alone time?”
