“But with Max gone and you single now. I’m just…I…I’m just going to be honest. I really want to put my hands on you.”

She shivered. That sounded amazing to her too. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. But I know it’s complicated.” He shook his head. “And you don’t like to have guys you’re involved with around Max, and I get that. Hell, I respect that about you. I just… I can’t stop thinking about you. Wanting you. You’re making me crazy and the more time I spend with you, the more I want you.” He looked over at her, then winced. “Fuck sorry. Well… shit.” He shifted and began tidying up the napkins.

What just happened? She reached out and set her hand on his arm, and he stopped moving. “Jeff?”

“What?” He kept his head down, not making eye contact with her.

“Look at me.”

He shifted his weight and slid back on the couch and raised his head to look at her. “Sorry, the last thing you need is me putting the moves on you.”

If only that were true. As much as her mind knew it was a bad idea for them to get involved, her body completely disagreed. But if he could admit how he was feeling, the least she could do was meet him halfway. “I’m not sure I’d say it’s the last thing I need.”

He shifted, leaning toward her slightly. “No? So, you’re saying the fact that I’m attracted to you still isn’t a bad thing?”

“It’s definitely a complicated thing, but not sure I’d say bad since I’m equally attracted to you still.”

“Oh, yeah?” The corner of his mouth kicked up into a cocky smile. “You saying you think about me, too? You check out my ass as much as I do yours?”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course I don’t check out your ass. What kind of mother would I be if I noticed that kind of thing? Although would it kill you to wear a baggy shirt every so often?”

He laughed. His eyes twinkled when he looked at her. “Well, thank fuck you noticed. I thought I was going to have to pull out the tank tops next if I didn’t start getting a reaction soon.”

She smacked him on the arm. “You’re an idiot.”

“True.” He shifted his body, so he was facing her. “So, what are we going to do about this attraction?”

She chewed her bottom lip. The smart thing to do would be to ignore it completely. Her eyes lingered on his muscular chest. Too bad she wasn’t feeling too smart. “I’m not sure we can act on it without things getting messy.”

“Okay, let’s just talk this through. What are you worried about?”

She rolled her eyes. “Seriously? I think it’s pretty clear what I’m worried about. The same thing you are.”

“Okay, okay, yeah, obviously it would be a bad idea to be all grabby hands with each other in front of Max?”

“All grabby hands?” She snickered.

“Fuck off.” He laughed. “You know what I mean.” He held her stare. “I think if we go into this knowing that we both want to protect Max, then it’ll be fine.”

“So what are you thinking? Fuck. Get it out of your system and we go back to normal?”

“No.” He reared back. “Is that what you want?”

Uncomfortable, she shifted her weight to her right hip and pulled up her left leg onto the couch. “I don’t know. I mean…what do you want?” What was it about this man that affected her like this? Normally with guys she dated, she laid it out clearly for them in black and white exactly what the boundaries were. They were completely separate from her kid. There would be no outings together with her and Max, no coming over for dinner. But with Jeff? That boundary had already been destroyed. And because of how she felt about him, she wasn’t sure she wanted any boundaries in place. Hell, he already had a relationship with Max. They already did family dinners and outings and she loved it. That was the problem. She didn’t want to ruin what they had already.

He shifted so his knee hit hers. “What are you scared of, Saskia?”

“I think it’s pretty obvious what I’m scared of? What if we fuck and then you decide you don’t want to continue that anymore and things get weird and then you don’t want to hang out with Max?”

“Okay first, nothing will make me stop wanting to be around Max. I don’t give a fuck what happens between us. I will always be there for Max. No matter what.” He pinned her with a stare. “I’m a grown ass man, Kia, and I can behave like a grownup for my kid, no matter what. Got it?”

Her stomach quivered. Why did that turn her on so damn much? “Got it.”

“Good. Besides, who’s to say you aren’t going to be the one who has sex with me and then feels all awkward?”

Offended, she scowled at him. “Well, as you said, I’m a grown ass woman and I can act like a grownup for my kid.”
