The kid was such a goofball.

“So it’s agreed your mom will come back first thing and make a feast fit for kings.” He eyed Kia. Maybe he could convince her to stay over if Max thought she’d just come back early enough.

“Mom could just stay here,” Max said.

Jeff snapped his gaze to Kia, who stood open-mouthed, staring back at him. “Why would your mom stay here?”

Max shrugged. “You got lots of rooms.”

“True,” Jeff agreed. He looked over at Kia. Her mouth pursed tight and the little lines between her eyes became more pronounced.

“I’m gonna go play before bed.” Max hopped off the stool and bolted from the room.

Kia slumped against the island. “Well, that was weird.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean it’s weird he wants me to stay over. Do you think he knows about us?” She chewed her bottom lip.

“Yeah, I think that’s exactly why he wants you to stay, so we can fuck.” He rolled his eyes at her. “God, no, Kia, I don’t think he knows. I think he’s a kid who wants to have you here in the morning so he can eat freaking delicious French toast the second he wakes up. Don’t make it more complicated than that.” He stepped toward her and placed his hands on her waist. “But I think he’s on to something with you staying over.” He leaned in and pressed a kiss against the side of her neck. Goosebumps pooled on her skin. “If you stay, we can christen my bed.”

She scoffed. “Like it hasn’t been christened before.”

He leaned back and looked her in the eye. “It hasn’t. I don’t do casual hookups at my house.”

Her eyes narrowed. Kia held his stare like she was trying to figure out if she believed him or not.

“Besides, I just got a new mattress last month.” He grinned and waggled his eyebrows.

Kia smacked him on the arm and scrunched up her nose. “You’re an ass.”

He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her against him. “True. But seriously. Stay. You can sleep in one of the spare rooms in case Max wakes up. But stay. I want you here.” He nuzzled his nose against her neck. “Max isn’t the only one that wants to wake up to have you here.”

Her body melted against his. “Fine.”

He tilted his head to look at her. “Yeah?”

Kia rolled her eyes. “Yes, but I’m sleeping in the spare room in case Max wakes up.”

“Fantastic.” He ran his finger around the edge of her waistband and dipped his hand under the edge of her shirt so he could feel her skin. “And what about the before bed activities?”

Kia shifted against him, moving her legs so hers were on either side of his thigh. “I guess we’ll have to see how persuasive you can be.”

Taking the hint, he pressed his thigh against the seam of her jeans, and she closed her eyes. “I think we both know how persuasive I can be when I’m properly motivated.”

“And are you motivated?” she asked.

He ground his thigh again, loving the way she squirmed against him. “Fucking right I am.”

“Mo-om,” Max’s voice called from down the hall.

Kia groaned. The disappointment in her tone matched the way he was feeling. With a laugh, he rested his forehead against hers. “To be continued.”

Over the past couple of weeks, they’d fallen into a comfortable routine. He saw them practically every day. Usually at Kia’s house, but on days she worked late, he’d started bringing Max back to his place and making dinner, hanging out, occasionally Max slept over. He liked it. The whole dad, family man, routine was a world away from his old life, but it fit. He was going to miss it when he headed to spring training at the end of the week.

He absently played with Kia’s hair as she lay with her head on his lap while she watched some ridiculous reality TV show. He lived for these moments alone with her, after Max had gone to bed, when she would finally let him touch her the way he wanted. She still wasn’t willing to put a label on what they had, but maybe with camp coming up, they should.

He picked up the remote and turned the TV off. Kia sat up and looked at him. “What’s up?” she asked.
