“I have to make this right, but…”

“Do that.” Aiden ended the call. Damn it. He’d reached his apartment building and parked his car. Vivian wasn’t going to answer his texts or calls, but maybe Annie would.

He waited until he was in his apartment before he called Annie.

She answered on the second ring. “I don’t want to talk to you.”

“Annie, please give me a chance to explain, I—”

“You’ve broken her heart, you big jerk; there is nothing to explain. Please just stay away from her.” The next moment, she ended the call.

Well, hell. His brain working overtime, Aiden walked toward the room he’d turned into an office. He shouldn’t get involved in other people’s lives—he’d learned that the hard way when he’d tried to help Samantha Taylor two years ago.

Instead of listening to his gut, though, he’d not only tried to help the gorgeous Doctor Miller, he’d also gone and fallen in love with her.

Minutes later, he opened his laptop. He had a story to write.

His fingers were typing long before the chaos in his brain had a chance to subside. Words, phrases, thoughts, jumbled sentences were bleeding on to the white screen in front of him.

At some point, he stopped typing and stared at the words in front of him. Frowning, he read through the last paragraph. The story had veered into an unforeseen direction. Should he change it?

Before he’d even finished the thought, though, the next words were rolling out, and he continued typing.

By the time he’d finished, he was empty. Lighter. And hungry. While rereading the last few paragraphs, he picked up his phone and ordered food. Not the story he’d intended to write when he’d sat down earlier, but the story his heart had wanted to tell. The type of story he hadn’t been able to write for the longest time.

He’d just put his phone down when it rang.

It was a video call from his sister. Craig was also on the line, he discovered as he answered. A conference call from his sister and cousin usually meant someone was in trouble.

“Everything okay?” he quickly asked.

“We’re fine, thanks,” Riley said with a straight face. “Aunt Janice called me.”

“And then Riley called me,” Craig added.

Aiden groaned out loud. “So you know what happened in Marietta?”

“Is it true?” Riley asked.

“Yes, I messed up…”

“I’m not talking about your colossal blunder,” Riley interrupted him. “I’m talking about the fact that you’ve gone and fallen in love with a doctor in Marietta.”

Stunned, Aiden stared at the small screen of his phone. “How the hell do you know that?”

Craig chuckled. “Aunt Janice knows. So, it’s true. I didn’t believe Riley. My little cousin in love. She must be someone special.”

Shaking his head, Aiden cussed under his breath.

“I heard that!’ Riley called out. “Fortunately, your nephew is in bed; otherwise, I’d have to explain to him again why he can’t use words his Uncle Aiden uses.”

His head spinning, Aiden only vaguely heard Riley’s teasing. He was struggling to find the right words. “How does Aunt Janice know how I feel? I’m not even sure whether it’s love or just lust.”

“Because she’s Aunt Janice.” Riley smiled. “So, tell us about the doctor.”

“And why the brother punched you,” said Craig with a grin.

Aiden groaned out loud. “You’ve heard about that, too? I thought news spread fast only in small towns! There isn’t anything to say, really. It doesn’t matter what I feel. I’ve hurt her. Didn’t meant to do it, but it happened anyway. I should’ve known not to get involved in someone else’s life; it never ends well. She doesn’t want to talk to me. End of story.”
