His mouth quirked and his arms tightened around me, but the flatness of his eyes betrayed his uncertainty.

“I’m serious about the invitation,” I said softly, brushing his hair back from his face.

He closed his eyes. Breathed deep.

I looped my arms around his neck and snuggled closer.

His heart thumped against the wall of his chest.

“You going to have a sleepover at my place?”

His chest expanded and held. “How about I work from here during the day, and Sia and I will come to you at night when you get home from work.”

“Sounds like a plan.” I smiled and kissed him.

His hands wandered over my hips.

“And, if you’d like, you can cuff me to the bar.”

He hugged me then pushed me off his lap. “Clothes off, Hope.” He grinned. “Happy New Year to me.”

I dreaded going back to work. Anton’s was in chaos when I left, and according to Eloise who kept me abreast of the important stuff, it had only gotten worse.

I didn’t even make it to lunchtime before calling Maeve.

“Hope!” she exclaimed. “It’s so good to hear from you! How is Anton’s treating you, honey?”

Maeve had never called me honey in my life.

To my recollection, Maeve never sounded excited about anything in her life.

“First off, how are you?”

She sighed. “Marvellous. Truly marvellous.”

“Things going well with the man candy?” I teased.

“You could say that… we’re engaged!”

I swallowed the bitter taste of envy. “That’s wonderful! When are you tying the knot?”

“Oh,” she scoffed. “He just asked me on New Year’s Day. We haven’t discussed the details yet. How are you doing?”

“Uh…” I really didn’t want to rain on her parade.

“Uh, oh. Spill, honey.”

“Ratface is gone.”

“I heard,” she purred. “I also heard a certain someone had a bit to do with that. Are you still arch enemies?”

“Uh…”

She burst out laughing. “Is it serious?”

“God, I hope so.”

A beat of silence. “Talk to me, Hope.”
