I turned to follow her line of vision and locked eyes with the low point of the entire trip.

His eyes gleamed, and his smile twisted as he gave me a sardonic nod.

I lifted my chin and slowly turned back to Maeve and Eloise. “Ugh. What is he doing here?” I wrinkled my nose. “He was the one dark spot in the whole experience.”

Maeve’s brows rose. “Ares? Really? He’s never been anything less than gentlemanly when I’ve run into him. He’s an excellent photographer. World class. He’s in high demand. No one knows why he’d even want to take this position.”

“Well…” Eloise licked the chocolate off her lips. “I’ve never seen him in person, though his reputation precedes him. I can’t see him suffering much rejection.”

My temper flared. “What reputation?”

Maeve’s sharp, curious gaze rested on my face as I struggled to tamp down my odd reaction. Not that odd, really. Why should he garner any admiration? He was an ogre.

“They call him The Hitman. Say he’s in and out with barely two words leaving you feeling like you don’t know what hit you.”

I ignored Eloise and the slow boil of my blood and addressed Maeve. “He’s one of those men who think they’re God’s gift to women. He’s the type to expect to be catered to for the privilege of looking at him.”

Eloise shook her head slowly back and forth, her eyes roving over him with such blatant appreciation I wanted to call her on her lack of professionalism.

And jam my thumbs into her eye sockets.

“I think even I would be tempted to service him,” she muttered.

Perhaps she would not be the best fit in terms of an assistant.

“Now, now, ladies. Let’s not sink down to the level of our male counterparts and objectify our colleagues and co-workers.”

“Co-worker?” I exclaimed. “He doesn’t work for Anton’s.”

Maeve’s eyebrows rose as she dipped her chin. “That changed as of yesterday morning when he signed a contract for the next six photoshoots.”

My mouth dropped open as Maeve nodded. “Yes, indeed. You better learn to play nicely. You’ll be working quite closely with him, especially as you take over more and more of the traveling.”

“Do you need an assistant?” Eloise brightened, and my blood pressure skyrocketed.

“Not at this time,” I hastily replied.

Maeve opened her mouth then shut it just as quickly. A small smile danced along the edges of her perfectly painted lips as they parted. “This should be interesting.”

Stupidly Handsome

“Minty? You home?” I called as I pulled open the screen door to Lucky’s place.

Hm.

I really needed to start thinking of this as Minty’s place, too. She might not want me just barging in like I always did. What was I thinking? Of course, she wouldn’t want me just barging in.

“Sparky!” Brayleigh squealed, reaching for Minty.

Minty smiled and swung her up in her arms. “Hello, dolly,” she murmured.

Brayleigh patted Minty’s face, then her throat, until her little hand made it to the sparkly bauble hanging around Minty’s elegant neck. “Mine sparky?” Brayleigh asked, her big baby blues trained on Minty’s face.

Minty laughed. “One day, dolly.” Patting her back, Minty lowered her to the floor. “Your sparklies are on the table in the living room. Go see!”

Brayleigh ran off, her elbows cocked and swinging, in joyful toddler anticipation.
