Page 135 of Sweet Everythings

But her sweet, clean scent enveloped me, and the softness of her lap held me. The baby man reached for her, and I sobbed, “I was only four years old.”

Her.

Her fingers combed through my hair.

Her palms ran over my heaving back.

Her body bowed over mine.

And it was her voice, thick with her tears, tears she shed for me, that murmured sweet everythings over and over.

“I love you.”

“You are worthy.”

“You are everything to me.”

I soaked the front of her skirt but nothing on earth could compel me to move from the safety of her lap.

Hope

Anger threatened to consume me alive. I burned to kill her with my bare hands. Wrap my fingers around her skinny neck and squeeze until the life left her eyes.

In that moment, I could have done it.

Only one other time had I felt this angry.

When I came home to find Brayleigh crying behind that locked door.

But that wasn’t what he needed from me. He needed things I wasn’t sure I could give him.

I knew the party unearthed the pain of his past. When he didn’t text me back, when he didn’t answer my calls, I called my mom to come to my place and headed to his.

I closed my eyes, bent deep, pressed my kiss to the back of his neck.

Prayed over him, begged for peace, pleaded for healing.

Finally, his breathing deepened and evened out. He relaxed his hold on my skirt.

Tentatively, his fingers danced over my hips and a different type of tension radiated off his body.

A different kind of heat rose in mine.

Shifting, he nuzzled the apex of my thighs and began to knead the flesh of my hips.

My breath quickened and my thighs fell open around him as he ran his hands down the outside of my thighs to the hem of my skirt. Reaching under, he grasped my legs and firmly smoothed his palms back up to fist the sides of my panties.

“Hope.”

A husky demand.

A plea.

I lifted my hips and gave him my answer. “Yes, Ares.”

Without meeting my eyes, he nodded to indicate he heard my acceptance, then roughly yanked my panties down and pushed my skirt up.

“I can’t,” he muttered thickly. “I can’t take the time for you right now.”
