“No.” She dabbed at a crumb at the corner of her mouth. “Lucky told me you resigned from your job because you refused to work twelve-hour days and spend half the month traveling.”

“That’s true, actually,” I admitted. “I still feel like I lost something.”

She shrugged and took another cookie. “You did.”

My lips twisted to the side. I huffed out a disgruntled laugh. “That’s true, too.”

“Two things can be true at the same time. And, often, there are many ways of looking at something.” She relaxed back in her chair, lemonade in hand. “And some things can be both negative and positive.”

“I think, with this situation, it’s more positive, but it’s still a disappointment.”

“Of course. What’s the biggest disappointment?”

“That it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. I wasted so much time dreaming of that job. Then I got it, and it didn’t fulfil the promise of the dream. I didn’t like the extended hours, the travel, the excessive time away from Brayleigh. But also, I didn’t like being away from you and Lucky and Ava and dance. I missed so many good things.”

“What did you like about it?”

“I loved dressing the models, setting up the shoots, seeing the end results. I loved choosing new pieces for the store, sourcing different fabrics, talking to designers.”

“Hm. Have you ever considered being a stylist or a personal shopper? With your connections, and mine, it may be a viable option.”

By the time Minty left, we’d come up with a few possibilities. Possibilities that would allow me to stay in town, focus on the aspects of my job that I loved, and begin something new and exciting.

Never before had I considered going into business for myself.

The idea enthralled me.

Not long after Minty left, Lucky and Darcy showed up.

Lucky hung around outside and helped my dad clear the snow off the driveway, while Darcy burst into the house.

“Where’s my best bitch?” She caught sight of my mom and her eyes widened in surprise. Then a huge smile broke over her round face as she bounded over and wrapped my mom up in a hug. “Where’s my best bitches?”

My mom laughed. Secretly, I thought Darcy was her favorite of all Lucky’s siblings.

With Darcy, you got exactly what you saw. After hearing bits and pieces of my mother’s story, I could understand how she would appreciate that.

I appreciated it myself that Lucky’s sisters didn’t indulge in childish mind games.

“You’ve been wallowing,” she accused. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

I grinned. “Minty beat you to it.”

She scowled. “Frigging Minty. Fuck, I wish I had an ounce of her composure.”

“Me, too, lady. Me, too.”

“Well, if you need work to tide you over, I can always use the help.”

“Thank you, Darcy. I appreciate it. Might even take you up on it. Though I’m not sure the building is big enough to hold both of us.”

She laughed out loud. “You have a point.”

While Darcy headed to the kitchen to say bye to my mom, Lucky came in and gave me a quick hug. “If you need to talk, come over. Call. Text. Anything, okay?”

Tears came to my eyes.

I hadn’t lost him.
