Ares rolled over and buried his face in the pillow.

“Oh, Lord. You did both?”

“Uh…” His dark eyes slanted to the side. I was missing something, and their actions told me it was crucial.

“And the cats,” Brayleigh choked out. At almost 13, she took her role as big sister seriously. She was protective of her younger siblings, but rarely refused to participate in the madness.

And instigated it just as often as the other two.

“Drink your coffee, Mama,” Sia advised.

Ares began to cough, his entire body quaking.

I side-eyed him. “I hope you choke on your amusement.”

Which made him laugh harder. “Go get them, agapimeno,” he ordered Theo.

“Maybe after Mama finishes her pancakes?” he asked hopefully.

Ares waved him away. “Best get it over with.”

“We’ll help,” Brayleigh volunteered with a grin, always eager to jump into Theo’s chaos.

Theo.

Gift from God.

All the love he was denied, Ares lavished on his overactive boy.

And healed himself in the process.

I covered my face, snorting through my hands. “How bad is it?” I wheezed.

“So fucking bad,” Ares choked out. “I don’t know how you’re keeping a straight face. You won’t be able to in a minute.”

A thought occurred to me. “Oh no.”

“Oh, yes!” Ares crowed, knowing exactly where my thoughts landed.

I laughed harder. “What are we going to say?”

“We’ll send him in to plead his own case. We won’t go in until the coast is clear.”

“She’s going to kill me,” I muttered.

“For sure,” he agreed happily.

Harsh whispers sounded from the hallway.

“Just come in and get it over with,” I advised.

Ares sat back against the headboard, staring down into his lap, steeling himself for what was to come.

“Don’t take Lightning out of her cage!” Sia whispered. “You know Mama’s not a big fan.”

My mouth dropped open. “He made over the guinea pig.”

Ares’ shoulders shook.
