I froze.Balls to the wall. What did that even mean? Frig, was it sexual?

“I’m, uh, so yeah, after. I need to wash the sweat off and stuff something in my mouth but then I’ll be ready for whatever you’ve got. To show me. In the way of photographs…” I petered off, grinding my back teeth together to stopper my mouth.

He nodded. “Come to my room.” His lips tipped up slightly and his eyes lit up in a way that hit me in mywomb. “After.”

“After.” I pressed my lips together in what I hoped was a smile but suspected made me look like Kermit the frog. Nodding slowly, I backed away a couple of steps, then, unbelievably, broke out the finger guns.

The slight smile split wide-open, confirming what my inner cool chick suspected.

My mouth dropped open, and I froze for a split second before my nerves got the better of me.

Laughing like a loon, I spun on my heel and darted away.

Awkward as fuck.

I had no inner cool chick.

If I wanted to see him smile, all I had to do was speak. I covered my warm face with my palms. Ugh.

For the rest of the day’s shoot, I managed to avoid any conversation with him, focussing instead on set and wardrobe.

Thankfully, Eloise had proven herself to be a more than capable assistant. Not once had I caught her flirting with Ares.

“Did you hear?” she murmured when everyone was on set.

“Hear what?”

“Nora tried to cozy up to the Hitman, and he passed.”

“The Hitman?” I asked in an attempt to get more information while guarding my interest.

Eloise smirked. “I told you. His reputation precedes him. That’s what they call him. He hits and disappears.”

My stomach burned with jealousy. I swallowed. “He passed?”

Eloise nodded before continuing, her words tinged with venom. “According to Nora, he doesn’t get involved with people he works with. She has plans to sink her fake nails into him as soon as the shoot is over.”

The sweet breeze of relief blew through me, taking with it half the tension in my shoulders until a sudden thought pierced me.

My head whipped around to catch her gaze. “Are you jealous?”

Her mouth tipped up on one side as she assessed me. “No. I’m not into guys.” She looked at him. “Though, he’s so pretty even I’d be tempted.” She winked at me. “But I’ll leave him to you.”

My mouth dropped open as my hand came to my chest. “Me?”

Oh, frig. I looked like a southern damsel in distress.

She barked out a rough laugh. “Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.”

Voyeur

After grabbing a quick snack, I made my way to the yoga room. Setting up my portable speaker, I cued my group’s playlist and ran through our routine. It was barely a warm-up. Knowing every step by heart exercised my body while my brain zipped along unhampered by the need to pay attention to my body. Rehearsal was good, but nothing worked my brain over like improvisation.

Earlier in the day, at the end of my lunch break, which I took with Eloise instead of eating by myself as usual, I made a short playlist for improv. It included the song from the night before about my lost happily ever after, as well as one that reminded me of Ares.

Now that I knew he turned Nora down, my feelings toward him were much more charitable.
