My wife.

I’m more surprised than anyone to find I’m happy about that. What started out as revenge has become everything to me and I’ll end Mario Bachini’s life if he even breathes the same air as her. Whatever he has planned will happen over my dead body because the thought of anyone ever touching my wife causes the blood lust to enter my heart. I will kill to protect what’s mine and this time she is not getting away, despite the deal I made with her father. If Jefferson thinks he has a future with Abigail, he’s about to learn a very hard lesson.

Somehow, my scheming backfired on me. She took everything I threw at her and tossed it back in my face, and then reached in and stole my heart when I wasn’t looking. Perhaps it’s because I’m a possessive bastard, or just a bastard, but she’s my toy and I don’t share.

I make my way into the living room and find Cesare waiting for me.

He holds out a whiskey and smirks.

“Good evening, boss.”

“You could say that.” I grin and he rolls his eyes.

“Then you’re the lucky one.” He sighs and I say with concern.

“Any news?”

“No.”

Cesare chucks back the whiskey and I know it’s disguising the pain. He met a woman six months ago, Stephanie, who was a waitress at one of the clubs. She was different from the others, and he soon made her his woman. He seemed happy for once. There was a difference to him that I am only just beginning to understand. Then one day she disappeared. No word on the street, nothing. Nobody could tell us what happened, and it’s been driving him nuts. Cesare is a man who gets information from the unlikeliest places and even he can’t discover her whereabouts. He won’t stop trying, though, and I’ll do everything possible to help him with that.

“Are we set for tonight?” I ask, hoping it’s all in place.

“My contact assured me that Mario’s and Diana’s names are on the guest list.”

“Anyone else we should know about?”

He sighs and I snap, “What?”

I stare at him with a piercing gaze as he falters and says with a sigh, “Demelza Gregory.”

“Fuck.”

I drain my glass and reach for another. “That’s all I need.”

Demelza is a woman who tries too hard. Mainly with me. It appears her sole aim in life is to be my girlfriend and despite the fact I treat her like shit, she keeps coming back for more. Her parents are well known in society, her father Preston Gregory is high up on the New York stock exchange and so morally corrupt he makes me look like Santa Claus.

“Keep her away from me.” I growl and Cesare nods dutifully.

“Anything else to tell me?”

He shakes his head. “I’ll head down and check everything’s in place.”

I nod as he leaves the room and, taking advantage of my privacy, I reach for my phone.

“Leo.”

“Matteo. To what do I owe this call?”

Leonardo is my older brother and set on inheriting the title of Don Ortega from our father. This whole charade is to ensure that happens and I say with a sigh.

“Any news on the will?”

Our father’s will is due to be read next week and we need to cast our eyes on it. If he left everything to Diana, our evil stepmother and Mario’s whore, we are screwed. If he did, we need to re-write it and fast and Leo has been tasked with getting access to it.

“No, but I’m working on it.”

“I hope you work fast because time is a luxury we don’t have.”
