Cesare slides in beside me and I point to Jefferson’s car.

“I never knew Jefferson Stevenson was familiar with Mario?”

Cesare seems confused. “What makes you say that?”

I fill him in, and he says thoughtfully, “I’ll do some digging.”

There is something happening I can’t place; it’s surrounding me like a storm waiting to break. Everything that happened tonight swirls around my mind, and I think of Abigail and why she felt the need to run. I’m not proud of my reaction to Diana, but surely, she wasn’t threatened by that. Was it seeing Mario? Is there something I’m missing and there’s more to it than she’s letting on? Then there’s Jefferson. Is he involved in this somehow and was he sent by her father to bring her home? Was it all one big trap they set to bring me down and Abi was the bait that tempted me?

My head hurts as every possible scenario runs through my mind, and I don’t even trust my own instincts right now, so I reach for my phone and text my brothers.

Matteo

Find out what you can about Jefferson Stevenson and Mario Bachini. I saw them talking in shadows. There’s something we’re not seeing.

Leo

I’m on it.

Dom

There’s something you should know. Call me.

I waste no time and as soon as I hear his rough voice, I snarl. “What it is it?”

“There’s an organization called The Dark Lords. Remember, they took Flora and Mario, and Diana were involved.”

I remember the story and say roughly, “What’s that got to do with Jefferson?”

“When we busted Flora out, we ripped some names from the bastards who thought it would spare their lives. Stevenson was among them. Judge Stevenson.”

“And you think Mario and Jefferson are connected through this fucked up organization?”

“I’d be surprised if they weren’t.”

“So, what are you saying?”

“I’m saying not to trust any of the fuckers because this is twisted shit that gets people’s hearts ripped out. My advice is to follow them, and they will lead you to your answer.”

There’s a brief silence and I hate the quiver in my voice when I say, “Abigail’s gone.”

“How?”

“Shit went down, and she escaped through the restroom window. We’re searching for her now.”

I’m surprised at the genuine concern in his voice as he says gruffly,“Then find her and fast because if she’s involved in that fucking dark lords shit, you may never see her again and your plan will be over before it’s even begun. My advice is to keep tabs on Mario and Jefferson. They may know something.”

He sighs heavily and then surprises me by softening his gruff voice.“Take care, brother. Call me if I can help.”

“Thanks man.” I cut the call, hating the emotion surrounding me when I think of my brothers. Despite falling out, we only have each other’s best interests at heart, showing the power of family. They will kill for me, and I would do the same and yet now I have something else to think about and the fear for my wife grows by the second causing me to snap, “Tell the driver to take us to Jared Kensington’s penthouse. I’m guessing she’s there.”

Cesare taps on the window and issues the instructions and I sit back in my seat and glance out of the window, praying I’ll catch a glimpse of red in the shadows.

It doesn’t take us long before we reach the swanky apartment block where Jared has his penthouse and, as we spill onto the streets, Cesare presses a huge bundle of dollars into the doorman’s hand and says darkly, “Jared Kensington.”

The doorman nods and steps aside, whispering what we need in Cesare’s ear.

We waste no time and crowd into the private elevator, and Cesare taps in the code that the doorman let slip.
