“Sinner. You have my sympathy because it’s doubtful that bastard is going to let you out of his sight now you’re in it.”

The other men laugh and yet I’m happy at his words. The trouble is, I doubt Jonny will want me after this because of what I did to him. It will take a lot of forgiveness and I’m not sure if we will make it, but right now, in this moment, he is everything I want in life, him and my baby.

My family.

CHAPTER20

JONNY

Reverend Peters is fucking terrified. His eyes are wide and his skin pale. His breathing is labored and not just because I am holding him in an iron grip.

A sense of calm washes over me as I hold his life in my hands and then with a wicked idea, I pull him to his own altar and growl, “Kneel, you bastard.”

I almost want him to refuse, but he cowers down before me as I hold my gun to his head and press in hard, causing him to physically shake.

I say in a loud voice, “Gloria Jones. Died by drowning. Sandy Richards fell out of the top window of your house and broke her neck. Gayle Matthews shot herself, and Agatha Little hung herself in the woods behind your home.”

I shake my head and regard him with a ferocious expression. “That’s quite a list and pretty careless, wouldn’t you agree, Reverend?”

He sniffs as I press the steel in deeper.

“I have been informed their deaths weren’t the accidents you pretended they were.”

“You know nothing.” He hisses and I laugh out loud.

“There is a witness who has told us everything.”

“What witness?” For the first time, I watch the reverend’s walls crumble.

“Miss. Hughes.” I say, taking a chance and he stills and says quickly, “I don’t believe you. She would never talk about me. She idolizes me.”

“I didn’t say which Miss. Hughes now, did I?”

He stiffens as the realization causes him to wake up to judgment day and I carry on.

“It turns out sisters talk, and she had quite a story to tell when my brothers paid her a visit this morning.”

He says nothing and I growl, “As I said before, pretty careless, wouldn’t you say? I mean, if you’re going to cause another person’s death, at least be truthful about it.”

I crouch down and press the gun against his temple and whisper, “Guess what? You’re going to die today.”

His eyes are wide, and I glance down as the sound of liquid hits the floor, telling me he’s pissed himself through fright, which is just the reaction I wanted.

I glance at the window and, checking its open, I say loudly, “So, tell me, Reverend. What did Gloria Jones do to deserve death?”

He yells, “She was a sinner! All women are the spawn of Eve, put on earth to tempt God-fearing men. You should know, you were tempted by one of them. A whore.”

He cries out as I strike him hard around the face. Much like he did to Faith and his pitiful wail causes me to snarl, “So you can beat a woman, but you can’t take it from a man.”

He spits out blood on the floor and yells, “They were all the same. The devil’s work. Gloria, Sandy, Gayle, and Agatha. Four sirens whose sole purpose in life was to tempt me. To break me. They were God’s test, and I did what he told me to do. I resisted them. I punished them. I cleansed them!”

He is almost screaming now, which suits me just fine, and I push him further. “You killed them, didn’t you, Reverend? You made it look like an accident and you sent them to an early grave.”

“Ideliveredthem!” He hollers. “I did what God told me to do. I beat the sin out of them and tried to cleanse their minds by filling it with the good, pure words of the bible. They taunted me with their large eyes and impudent bodies.” He hisses. “They tried to drag me down and make me fall, but I was too strong for them. I punished them for their sins and used them as the whores they were.”

“You raped them.” I growl and he laughs out loud like the maniac he is.

“You call it rape. I call it teaching them a lesson. They would experience the dominance of men. Put them in their place so they could understand their bodies were good for only one thing. Bearing a child. I stripped them of their looks, dignity and humanity to teach THEM A LESSON!”
