“Business?” Faith shakes her head in confusion. “What business and how do you know anyone in Chicago?”

Purity shrugs. “I have my ambitions, Faith. I always told myself if I ever left Heaven, I would try my luck in Chicago.”

“But how? You have no money, nowhere to live, no friends …”

Faith breaks off as Purity holds up her hand and says with the determination that I am beginning to love about her, “I have my plan and I have money and for your information, I am assured of a place to stay.”

“Tell me.”

Faith won’t give it up and Purity shrugs. “I can’t say. I’ve kept this secret for many years and it’s up to me to see it through.”

Rebel steps forward and holds out his phone to Purity and Danny hands her a wad of dollar bills and a credit card. Rebel says firmly, “Just call home if you need us. It’s programmed in and we’ll be right there.”

Danny says with a smile. “You’ve got balls, darlin’, Chicago won’t know what hit it.”

Rebel steps forward and says, “I’ll make sure she’s ok.”

Faith is agitated. “This isn’t right. Purity, please. You’re not strong enough to go there on your own.”

“I won’t be on my own.”

This makes us all stare at her in surprise and she grins.

“I’ll tell you all everything if it works out.”

I watch as she hugs Faith carefully so as not to disturb Hope and she whispers, “I know where you are. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll come and find you. Pinky promise.”

“Pinky promise.” Faith says through her tears and Rebel says loudly, “Come on, darlin’. I’ll take you to the airport and buy your ticket.”

Her eyes light up and if she has any misgivings, she’s hiding them well and as she heads to the door, she turns and fixes me with a frown. “Take care of my bestie and my god daughter or I’ll be coming for you.”

“So, she’s your god daughter now.” I grin and she shrugs. “Obviously. Who else would love that baby as much as I do outside of her own parents? I’ll do anything for them, so watch your step, soldier.”

She turns and Danny shakes his head as they leave the room and whistles, “Should I follow them?”

“Why?” Faith is worried, and he chuckles softly.

“I’m not sure Rebel is man enough to handle a woman like Purity.”

“You’ve got that right.” I laugh out loud and as I reach for Faith’s hand, I can’t get my family home quickly enough.

CHAPTER23

FAITH

Mr. Gaston is waiting and as we leave, Miss. Hughes, I say to Jonny, “What will happen to her?”

“The cops will pay her a visit. If they discover she was in on it, she can say goodbye to her freedom.”

“Do you think she was?” I feel sick at the thought, and Jonny shrugs. “I doubt it. I’m guessing she was just believing everything her sister told her. That’s the thing about our hometown, Faith. It’s filled with gullible fools who can’t think for themselves.”

“Aside from a few.” I smile as I gaze down at Hope and any worries instantly evaporate.

Albert says over his shoulder. “I’m glad it worked out for you both, although God knows what I’m going to tell Purity’s folks.”

“Tell them nothing. I doubt they deserve it and if she wants them to know, she’ll inform them herself.” I say quickly, and Jonny nods in agreement.

“Her father worked for the reverend and is equally guilty. I’m guessing he will be heading to jail, anyway. He was in too deep and who knows what he did to earn his place by Reverend Peter’s side?”
