“I won’t argue with you there.”

“Come on,” I say. “You can think about your decision on the way to the imaging place.”

She freezes on the spot. “What? No. I have an hour and a half left and I haven’t even tallied up the tickets for the day yet.”

“Call Gail. See if she can come in now. We need that taken care of.” I point to her shoulder.

She laughs. “There’s no need to go ’n do this now. I’ll take care of it tomorrow.”

I’m still in her personal space and something inside of me is about to snap. I have this strange, domineering desire to fix her. To make her feel better. I can see the pain on her face and it’s driving me crazy and stressing me out.

I point to the desk phone. “Get Gail on the phone, put it on speaker.”

“Uh, okay,” she replies, picking up her cell and scrolling for Gail’s number. She dials from her cell and sets it on the desk as the line trills on speakerphone.

“Hey, Quinn. Everything all right?” she answers.

“Gail, this is Lincoln Silverstone. Is there any way you can come a little early? As in, right now? I need to take Quinn for medical attention.”

Quinn’s eyes widen.

“Oh, uh, yeah, sure, I’ll be there in ten. Is everything all right?”

“I’m fine,” Quinn replies, giving me a look that says she’s not too happy with me.

“Perfect, see you then,” I reply, ending the call with a push of a button.

Then, I pull out my cell and search for a local imagining place. I hit thecallbutton from the website.

“Vanguard Imaging, how can I help you?”

“Do you take walk-ins?” I ask.

“Only for X-rays, sir. Mammograms, MRIs, CTs, and all others need to be scheduled.”

“I’m on my way for an MRI. This needs to get done today. I’m sure you have something available?”

“Let me look.” She’s quiet as she types on a keyboard. “Next available MRI is in about a week.”

“Any of your other locations around have something today? This is pretty urgent, the patient is in extreme pain.”

“You could take him or her to the ER,” she suggests.

“We’ll be there within the hour. Open something up.” I hang up and know I’m going to have to throw money at the problem, but I don’t fucking care.

Quinn

I cannot believe the way he’s behaving. I’ve never, in four years, seen this man act like this. It’s completely out of character and I begin to wonder if he’s got some kind of multiple personality disorder.

“Mr. Silverstone”

“Lincoln. Or Linc.”

“Linc, please. They probably won’t even see us! I have work to do. Let me call back and schedule for next week. I can wait, I promise. Plus, if I’m being as honest as Abe Lincoln here, no pun intended, I really don’t have the money for this right now. I’m still paying off the ER bill.”

He chuckles. “As your employer, I’ll be covering the cost of the MRI and any surgery you might need. Also, send me the ER bill, and I’ll take care of it.”
