“Ain’t that the truth,” I reply.

“But we were good renters, so they’re not all bad,” she comments.

“Yeah, you’re right. Linc says we’ll use a property management company and they’ll do all the background checks and collect the rent and stuff. I mean, it’s a nice townhouse. If I decide to rent, maybe I’ll get lucky and get a nice, quiet married couple.”

“Like your neighbors?” she snorts.

“Oh, God. Those two old coots will probably drive away any renters, they’re so damn annoyin’!”

“So, you’re gonna move into his big ol’ house. What if y’all get married? Gonna live there or somewhere else?” she asks.

“He actually brought that up. He offered to sell it and buy us something new, but I told him no way. As long as no other woman has lived there, I was fine with it. It’s a badass mansion, sis. Wait ’til you see it. Swimmin’ pool, playroom, like ten bedrooms—”

“Playroom? What? For kids? He ain’t got none, right?”

“Uh no, it’s very much an adult playroom.”

She gasps. “What, like in that book? Is it red?”

I giggle. “Only the lights. We play in there sometimes.”

“Girl, you out there livin’ your best life and not tellin’ me about this stuff? For shame!”

“I’m tellin’ you now, silly!” I wipe down the last part of the counter and rinse the sponge in the sink.

She laughs. “So when do we get to meet your Daddy Warbucks?”

“Don’t call him that to his face. He didn’t even get the reference when I said it a few weeks ago.”

She chuckles. “You called him that?”

I ignore that and say, “That’s why I’m callin’. We wanna come visit so he can meet everyone. Plus, I’m hella homesick. Summer’s endin’ so I know the kids are gonna be back in school soon and we wanna come down before they go back so we can do some fun stuff.”

“Well, they go back in a few weeks. Me ’n Dan ain’t got nothin’ going on but you better text or call Leanna and Rob and see if their families are doin’ anything. As far as I know they’re not. Leanna’s just getting her classroom ready for when school starts and her oldest is startin’ high school.”

“He has a name, you don’t have to talk to me like I don’t know my own nephew.”

“Sorry. It’s just that you been away so long. I miss you, sissy. I can’t wait to see you.”

“I miss you so much, too. Now, let me call Leanna and Rob, then Mom to see if they have anything goin’ on. I won’t bother with Memaw, I know they don’t go nowhere.”

She laughs. “You got that right. She’s gettin’ crankier by the day, too, ooh wee.”

“She’s always been cranky,” I say with a laugh. “Bye, Macy, love you.”

“Love you, too, sis.”

I end the call and take my gloves off, carrying my phone to the living room where I know I’ll be on the phone for the next two hours with my family.

Twenty-Nine

Lincoln

We sit on the plane in first class, drinking champagne and chatting. I stare at Quinn, and she looks so beautiful with a big smile on her face as she tells me hilarious stories about her family that I have a hard time believing, they’re so outrageous.

“Just know that my family’s as blunt as I am. They aren’t going to hold back,” she warns me.

“Duly noted,” I reply. “I’ll brace for impact.”
